Police Officer
Under general supervision on an assigned shift; performs a variety of law enforcement and modern crime prevention work; controls traffic flow; patrols an assigned area for the prevention of crime and enforcement of federal, state and local laws and regulations, and arrests violators as necessary; performs investigative work; and other related law enforcement work as required.
Minimum qualifications include graduation from a California Basic Police Academy, completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent, and supplemental courses or special training in law enforcement work. License required : possession of an appropriate valid California operator's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Medical requirements include meeting and maintaining medical, health, and physical standards as required by the department. Physical demands include strength, stamina, coordination, and balance to perform various law enforcement duties. Working conditions include exposure to confined spaces, stress, and hazardous materials. Examples of duties include patrolling assigned areas, answering calls for protection, stopping unsafe drivers, conducting investigations, serving warrants, testifying in court, administering first-aid, preparing reports, and transporting prisoners.
Desirable qualifications include the ability to demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory, learn standard radio codes and dispatch procedures, make mature independent decisions, analyze situations accurately, learn and apply laws and regulations, prepare clear and concise written reports, understand and carry out directions, meet and maintain physical standards, establish cooperative working relationships, demonstrate cultural awareness and ethic sensitivity, accurately aim and fire a weapon, and bilingual fluency in Spanish and Asian languages is highly desired. Knowledge of basic police operations, federal, state, and local laws, city streets, safe operation of vehicles, department policy and procedures, and skill in appropriate responses to law enforcement situations and safe use of firearms and other weapons are also desirable.
