Job Description Summary

The Technical Writer oversees the publication of technical literature in variety of media types and languages, managing the Viega LLC technical literature library from conception to end of life. Responsibilities include developing, creating, writing, editing, and managing translation of various types of technical documentation for new and existing products, working closely with cross-functional teams in the U.S. and Germany. This includes recommending revisions or changes in scope, format, and content; proofreading documents for accuracy and consistent terminology; attaching visuals such as line drawings, photographs, diagrams, and tables to illustrate material; and storing technical documentation according to ISO and departmental standards. In addition, this position is responsible for documenting and maintaining technical literature procedures and maintaining technical literature templates and standards.

Job Description Details

Technical Writing

  • Manages technical literature activities, including but not limited to, technical literature writing, design, data storage, translations, print, and electronic outputs.
  • Manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines that may be tight at limes
  • Collaborates with Product Management, Product Services, other Tech Hub departments, and Marketing to obtain an in-depth understanding of product changes / updates; analyze existing content; recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, and content; and discuss status and timeframes. Provides regular status updates to internal team.
  • Develops new and modifies existing technical documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistent terminology; ensures documentation meets editorial, governmental, and legal requirements, and adheres to organizational standards for quality, graphics, technical content, formatting, and style. Recommends proper wording based on technical writing expertise. Format copy according to department / corporate style guides and brand voice.
  • Creates illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material using standard graphic art software (i.e., Adobe Creative Suite); edits photos and drawings to fit document needs.
  • Collects document approvals.
  • Maintain in-house design files; generates web ready PDF files, and print archives of projects.
  • Plan, edit, populate, and maintain content of corporate websites, the Technical Literature Intranet, Modus, and other electronic mediums by updating and adding information, managing existing information, and removing expired content and graphics as needed.
  • Continually and proactively demonstrates strong leadership skills in motivating and coaching others on how technical terminology should be written as it pertains to technical documentation of Viega's product offerings.

Translation Management

  • Coordinates translation services.
  • Manages quote, approval, and Purchase Request for translations projects.
  • Uses the translation management tool (Across) to translate technical documentation through extensive training with cross-functional teams.
  • Receives translated documents from Across and makes sure they are uploaded to appropriate platforms.
  • Printing

  • Oversees print production of new and existing literature from initial concept to final print.
  • Monitors inventory levels; identifies and triggers reprints as necessary.
  • Monitors and tracks print production to ensure proper and timely completion.
  • Coordinates proofreading services.
  • Understands proofreading marks.
  • Incorporated appropriate proofreading updates into technical literature.
  • Manages quote, approval, and Purchase Requests for proofreading and printing projects.
  • Manages warehouse intake for printed technical literature.
  • Establishes working relationships via phone, email, and in person with printers and proofreaders in order to coordinate projects.
  • File and Documentation Maintenance

  • Responsible for following the ISO process for technical literature from creation to publication on Livelink and the Internet; maintains records and files of work and revisions; updates folder structure to ensure all documents are current and maintained in an organized manner.
  • Documenting and maintaining technical literature procedures and standards and maintaining technical literature templates.
  • Working with Product Services to generate QR codes and web pages for product PI Sheets.
  • Training

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending training sessions, educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in local and national societies in order to keep current with industry standards.
  • Training and frequent communications with international colleagues.
  • Process and Quality Improvement

  • Develops, implements, maintains, and enforces technical literature standards and processes based on best practices and Viega guides and standards.
  • Continually evaluates existing processes to determine areas of improvement.
  • Provides input to the departmental budget.

  • Special Job Dimensions

  • International travel may be a requirement of the position to gain basic system understanding but would be limited to 1-week.
  • May have to work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Additional travel for product training, participation in local and national societies, and attending educational workshops is an ongoing requirement of the position.
  • Travel not exceed 10% of the time.

  • Education, Certification / License, and Work Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical Communication, Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or other related field.
  • Basic understanding of website concepts.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • 10+ years of experience in the creation of print and online media, preferably in a technical field with an emphasis on technical documentation.
  • Successful work history and a portfolio that demonstrates excellent written communication.

    Total Rewards Package :

    Compensation :

  • Base : $89,000 - $116,000 annually (CO), based on specific compensable factors including, but not limited to education, work experience, and geographic market.
  • Bonus : This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance.
