The Lead Catering Cook is responsible for following instructions provided by Catering Chefs and overseeing events from start to finish in the absence of Catering Chefs by leading the BOH staff through event execution. This role may include loading and transportation between campus buildings, as well as all aspects of prep, cooking, serving, and event wrap-up according to Catertrax orders and catering team guidance. Typical workdays are Tuesday through Saturday.
This is a part-time, hourly position without benefits. The hiring range is $20.27-$26.60 per hour.
- Ensures food is properly and safely prepared, stored, and served, complying with sanitation, health, and hygiene standards, and using supplies and equipment efficiently to minimize waste. Must be fluent in Serve Safe guidelines.
- Demonstrates advanced kitchen skills and knowledge of kitchen vocabulary and equipment.
- Reviews production sheets and Catertrax menus with catering chefs, preparing food according to recipes and in appropriate volumes based on instructions.
- Communicates effectively with BOH and FOH personnel to ensure quality and timely food production.
- Supports Catering chefs by leading on-call BOH cooks and support staff as needed, especially during events when chefs are absent.
- Must be able to self-manage and lead with integrity, aligning with department mission and community reputation.
- Responsible for the maintenance and care of Middlebury College catering and kitchen spaces and equipment.
- Must acquire and maintain a Middlebury College Driver's License to operate campus vehicles.
- Must understand the flow of events and be adaptable to changes at short notice.
- Willing to learn basic functions of Middlebury Catering's Catertrax platform.
- Requires 2-3 years of previous experience in cooking, kitchen, or restaurant settings.
Physical Demands
Must frequently lift 10-20 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, and reaching. Shifts may be over 8 hours and can occur any time, seven days a week, on campus. Appropriate attire and punctuality are mandatory.
