Arts for Learning Maryland (formerly Young Audiences of Maryland) is devoted to enriching the lives and education of Maryland's youth through educational and culturally diverse arts programs. Through Arts for Learning, professional teaching artists from all disciplines partner with educators, schools, and school districts to provide on average over 560,000 hours of learning in, through, and about the arts to more than 155,000 Maryland students annually.

About the After School Arts for Learning Academy (ASALA)

The After School Arts for Learning Academy (ASALA), operated by Arts for Learning Maryland (A4L) in partnership with Baltimore City Schools, offers students the opportunity to imagine, create, and express themselves through the arts.

This action-packed program runs four days a week, three hours per day . Students explore diverse art forms—from illustration and spoken word to percussion, drama, and dance—while also strengthening literacy and math skills through co-planned, arts-integrated instruction. Each site serves up to 156 students in groups of 26, taught by certified teachers and professional teaching artists.

Position Overview

The ASALA Classroom Teacher ensures rigorous and engaging learning in literacy and math at After School Arts for Learning Academy (ASALA) sites. Classroom Teachers are paired with a Teaching Artist to co-plan and co-teach daily arts-integrated lessons. Teachers are also responsible for co-leading a SQUAD session focused on social-emotional learning and community building. This role is central to creating a supportive and inclusive after-school environment for students in grades PK–8.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach one daily 35-minute arts-integrated literacy or math class with a consistent student cohort.
  • Co-plan all arts-integrated lessons with a Teaching Artist partner.
  • Provide individualized support to students during instruction.
  • Lead a 15-minute SQUAD session and snack time to foster student identity and belonging.
  • Support recess and transitions as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain a positive classroom culture aligned with ASALA's mission and values.
  • Build relationships with students, families, and staff, ensuring inclusivity and support for all learners.
  • Complete lesson and unit plans weekly; post in classrooms and submit digitally for the ASALA Family Portal.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, assessments, and surveys.
  • Communicate weekly with families (in collaboration with Teaching Artists) and respond promptly to parent / guardian inquiries.
  • Participate in planning and execution of the culminating student showcase.
  • Collect and share student work and photos to support site documentation.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings, and submit reports as assigned.
  • Serve as a positive role model and ambassador for the ASALA program.
  • Qualifications

  • Current teaching certification required; special education certification encouraged.
  • Commitment to arts integration, equity, and inclusive education.
  • Ability to co-teach and manage a classroom of up to 26 students.
  • Experience building strong relationships with students and families.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and a collaborative spirit.
  • Strong communication skills and reliability in attendance.
  • Willingness to contact families by phone (school line or blocked personal number).
  • Ability to attend all required trainings and program dates.
  • Required Dates & Hours

    Professional Development & Training (Paid) :

  • Up to 10 hours of asynchronous pre-program training.
  • In-person PD week before the program begins.
  • 12 hours of race equity training during the program.
  • Program Schedule (subject to site adjustments) :

  • Monday–Thursday, 2 : 30–5 : 45 PM (3.5 hours / day).
  • Arrival 15 minutes before the program starts.
  • One monthly collaborative planning session (first Friday, 4–7 PM).
  • One weekly 30-minute staff meeting.
  • One hour of weekly planning time.
  • Time Off

    This is a grant-funded, temporary, part-time role and is not eligible for PTO. However, employees accrue Sick and Safe Leave at 1 hour per 30 hours worked, beginning on day one. Leave may be used for illness, preventive care, family care, parental leave, or issues related to domestic violence / assault.

    Compensation

    This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary position .

  • Instruction time : $40 / hour
  • Meetings & planning : $30 / hour
