Position Summary
Performs physician-defined routine and specialized diagnostic imaging procedures. Provides support / assistance as needed.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine diagnostic imaging procedures through technical expertise of equipment and procedure protocol. Operates and ensures quality control for scanning and image recording equipment. Evaluates equipment performance, initiates corrective action, and maintains records for the quality control program of gamma camera imaging systems in accordance with federal and state regulations and institutional policies. Documents patient history and ensures information is available for use by a licensed independent practitioner. Completes and verifies accurate informed consents.
- Performs procedures or examinations under the order of a licensed medical practitioner for diagnostic interpretation or therapeutic intervention.
- Maintains established radiation safety standards to minimize radiation exposure to patients, healthcare personnel, and the public; uses protective devices, shields, dose reduction, and ALARA principles. Maintains protocols for handling spills and unplanned releases of radiation. Proficient in the safe handling, security, and storage of radiopharmaceuticals, including procurement, dose calculation, administration, documentation, and disposal as appropriate. Complies with State, Joint Commission, ACR and NRC requirements for handling and administration of radioisotopes.
- Uses appropriate techniques, radiopharmaceuticals, and medications to ensure quality diagnostic images and / or laboratory results. Obtains biological samples for testing as needed. Proficient in oral administration of radioisotopes. Performs venipuncture and maintains IV access as prescribed by a licensed practitioner. Ensures correct charging, stock maintenance, and vendor ordering. Practices aseptic technique and universal precautions and applies infection prevention processes.
- Educates, trains, orients, and assists new staff members. Provides education for student technologists. Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
- Assists licensed independent practitioner with interventional procedures, including time-outs per policy. Proficient in patient assessment, monitoring, and sterile technique as required. Supports patients, families, practitioners and visitors before, during, and after procedures.
- Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and uses BLS as needed.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education annually and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education : None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the license / certification required by the issuing authority.
Minimum Experience : Must have successfully completed an educational program accredited by NMTCB or ARRT. Registry-eligible candidates must have documentation of training / competency checklist and authorization to inject radiopharmaceuticals signed by an authorized user.
Licensure Requirement : One of the following must be met within 1 year
Path 1 : American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (N) required, orPath 2 : Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board certified (CNMT) requiredState licensure in accordance with Tennessee guidelinesSenioriy level
