    Job Description

Performs a variety of skilled landscaping work in the maintenance and repair of County grounds and completes and maintains records associated with assigned work orders. This position also performs work in support of building maintenance as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Facilities Manager.

    Essential Functions

  • Picks up and removes litter and debris from grounds;
  • Blows sidewalks using powered equipment;
  • Blows and collects leaves, limbs, and other tree and plant debris;
  • Installs, maintains, and replaces shrubs and other ornamental plantings and ground cover as directed;
  • Maintains lawn and natural areas according to corporate and industry standards; Loads and transports equipment and materials to buildings using County vehicles;
  • Assists in the preventative maintenance and repair of motorized equipment and performs small engine repairs and maintenance as needed;
  • Inventories and purchases supplies and materials as needed and serves as the contact for contractors;
  • Participates in special projects related to exterior maintenance as assigned;
  • Assists the Building Maintenance division as needed;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in landscaping maintenance, building maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of horticultural principles and practices applicable to landscaping, maintenance, and upkeep of grounds, flowers, and shrubs;
  • Thorough knowledge of grounds maintenance and repair of equipment associated with landscape maintenance;
  • Thorough knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with the type of work assigned;
  • General knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance and repair;
  • Ability to operate commercial landscape equipment efficiently, safely, and independently;
  • Ability to operate handheld power equipment such as chain saws, blowers, trimmers, edgers, and other power equipment;
  • Ability to operate commercial trucks and trailers to include loading equipment, transporting, and off-loading;
  • Ability to work in extreme outdoor environments for extended periods of time while performing moderate to heavy work;
  • Ability to recognize and diagnose problems associated with landscaping and building maintenance;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to make decisions within the scope of responsibility;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
  • Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking, hearing, use of hands and fingers, handling or feeling, frequently requires climbing, balancing, reaching with hands and arms, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting, smelling, pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires visually inspecting small defects and / or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special Requirements Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
