Since establishing the Renew Capital presence in Africa in 2012, we have been pioneering an innovative blended-finance model that partners with the development community and focuses on investing in high-growth small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This blended-finance model allows us to invest in smaller deals that are often overlooked by larger investors but are too big for microfinance. We then help these companies build disciplined, gender-smart and climate-smart management systems and teams and grow them into market leading companies. As a result of our investment work to date, Renew Capital has mobilized millions of dollars into businesses in Africa, and built a large network of investors, the Renew Capital Angels.

Role Summary

As a senior consultant, private sector development project lead, you will lead a cross-cultural team of analysts, consultants, investment professionals, lawyers, and other business professionals to execute a multi-year program that aims to dramatically improve the SME investment ecosystem in Africa. As lead, you will ensure the project is implemented to Renew Capitals standards, adhering to the contract, and delivering results. The lead will be accountable for project outcomes and be evaluated on the quality of their deliverables and their ability to accomplish project targets on time and within the project budget.

Successful candidates will have a strong background in business and/or investment work, and/or management consulting. Successful candidates will be comfortable working in frontier markets, learning and working with foreign cultures, adaptive and emotionally intelligent, patient and an excellent communicator. Successful candidates will also be strong trainers, exceptional writers, and capable of handling data analysis and a variety of business and finance work. S/he will receive comprehensive onboarding and critical support from Renew Capitals leadership team and will be involved in a high-impact role creating significant social and financial impact on the continent.

Responsibilities

• Overseeing and driving the execution of a key development project by achieving results and meticulously delivering on all project milestones
• Developing and leading a team of project analysts
• Continuously improving and managing a collaborative company-wide M&E and reporting system that effectively captures the social impact of the firm, particularly in the area of gender equality
• Helping to develop and facilitate Renew Capitals core gender-smart programs by training SMEs both virtually and in-person
• Liaising with Renew Capitals asset management team to design and test interventions that fulfill project requirements and ultimately result in SMEs attracting growth capital from a variety of funding sources
• Providing coaching and technical assistance to a consortium of entrepreneurs looking to scale their companies and persist through various cultural and economical hurdles
• Preparing and reviewing project reports for clients that demonstrate Renew Capitals social impact results in a compelling and beautiful manner
• Managing communications with clients and running internal and external project meetings
• Creating, improving and driving the organizations adoption of Renew Capitals consulting project tools, systems and processes
• Reporting to and collaborating with Renew Capitals executive management team on a regular basis to continuously improve SOPs and efficiency in delivering project results

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters degree in business administration, finance or development is preferred
• 5+ years of management consulting and/or finance experience. Consulting experience in both the private sector and with an international development firm focused on gender equality is a plus
• Experience managing grant-based projects
• Proficiency in writing reports in English
• Strong project management skills certification in project management is a plus
• Exposure to the finance or private equity world
• Excellent Excel and PowerPoint ability

This position requires the candidate to be based in Africa. You may be asked to occasionally travel to Renew Capitals field offices across the continent.
