Join the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control as a Public Health Advisor I within the specialized Immigrant and Refugee Unit , based on-site at the Morrisania Chest Center in the Bronx . In this critical role, you will apply case management principles to connect with individuals arriving in NYC who have known risk factors for TB infection or disease. You will provide direct outreach, assist with case management tasks like scheduling appointments and follow-up reminders, collaborate closely with clinic staff and community partners, and maintain accurate records under supervision. This is a foundational role offering the chance to gain valuable public health experience while directly supporting the well-being of immigrant and refugee communities and contributing to TB prevention efforts in NYC. Meticulous documentation and strong communication skills are key to success in this position .

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO :

  • Conduct interviews / re-interviews and provide culturally sensitive education to patients infected with (or at risk for) TB, particularly within immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Refer patients to appropriate diagnostic facilities for medical examination and treatment.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and community partners to support patient care coordination.
  • Report accurately on the outcomes of clinical evaluations for TB among people identified as at-risk.
  • Present concise updates during team meetings.

PREFERRED SKILLS :

  • Experience in case management, patient navigation, or public health outreach.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including those with limited English proficiency.
  • Organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative and judgment, as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

    PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISER - 51191

    Qualifications

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twelve semester credits in health education, or in health, social or biological sciences; or

    2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and six months of full-time satisfactory experience in a health promotion or disease intervention / prevention program, performing one or more of the following : interviewing, conducting field investigations, assessing health risks, making referrals, or collecting and analyzing epidemiological data; or

    3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or

    4. Education and / or experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for one year of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and either twelve semester credits as described in "1" above or six months of experience as described in "2" above.

    Additional Requirements

    A. To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements listed above, at least one year of experience as a Public Health Adviser, Assignment Level I, or at least one additional year of experience as described in Qualification Requirement "2" above.
