Position Summary : The Substitute Health Assistant provides temporary support in addressing the health needs of students and provides appropriate care for ill and / or injured students under the supervision of the school nurse.
Qualifications : The qualified applicant must have a minimum of a high school diploma or grade level equivalent diploma (GED) and must have successfully passed one of the following programs :
- Current Iowa RN or LPN or MA (Medical Assistant) or CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant)
- Current / Up to Date CPR / BLS certification and Mandatory Reporter Training
- Experience working in a school setting, pediatrics or public health preferred.

Upholds school district health policies related to student health, safety, and confidentialityProvide basic first aid and emergency care to ill and injured students as directed by the school nursePerform and documents accurate vital signsInitiate, maintain, and update student medical and health records and databases on an on- going basis as directed by the school nurseMaintain accurate health logs for all student visits to the nurse's officeAid in updating and maintaining student immunization recordsCommunicate with students, school nurse, staff, and parent / guardian as directed by the school nurseAdminister medications to students in compliance with district policy and physician's orders as directed by the school nurseMaintain nurse office and suppliesSupport students' physical and emotional well-being during the school dayAct as an emergency responder in the buildingWillingness to learn special procedures (i.e., gastric-tube management, inhalation therapy, emergency protocols, etc.)Participate in specialized training for individual student's health care needs (i.e., catheterization, insulin injections, feeding tube care, etc.)Perform other tasks that may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the supervisor. The health assistant shall work under the general direction of the building administration and nurseComplete required district trainingReports to school nurse and building administrationOther duties as assignedPhysical Requirements : Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing / pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking.
Travel between school buildings may be required. Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Pay : $15.00 per hour as a sub health assistant
