About the Position :

The Student Health and Counseling Center strives to support students in achieving their academic professional and personal goals. Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is crucial for living a higher quality life and reaching your highest potential. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Mental Health Coach (Health Educator). Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a large urban multi-disciplinary university counseling center that prioritizes work-life balance professional development and collaborative practices. CAPS operates in alignment with the university calendar focusing on student-centered activities during the semester and professional development and administrative tasks during breaks. CAPS aims to be recognized as a department that is empathic respectful and supportive providing students with timely access to high-quality mental health care prevention education and intervention.

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) the Mental Health Coach is responsible for developing implementing providing and evaluating mental health education programs and initiatives that promote the overall mental health of students within the university community. Involves providing education to students individually in group formats and through outreach events. The Mental Health Coach collaborates with providers from CAPS TitanHealth TitanMed TitanWell and campus partners to deliver student mental health education and promote campus policy systems and environmental changes to support student wellness. The Mental Health Coach designs develops and implements evidence-based mental health education programs tailored to the university communitys needs and interests. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university in an approved program in health education social work social sciences nursing or a similar field and two years or the equivalent of progressively responsible health education experience which indicates possession of the required knowledge and abilities. Possession of a California license as a registered nurse and one year of experience which included responsibility in a major aspect of health education is one of several experience patterns which will be considered equivalent to graduation from a four-year college in a related field. Two years or the equivalent of progressively responsible health education experience which indicates possession of the required knowledge and abilities. An American Public Health Association approved masters degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health with an emphasis on health education Health Science or Public Health Administration may be substituted for one year of health education experience.

Thorough knowledge of program planning and evaluation. General knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly current and emerging college age student health problems and existing methods of intervention and control. General knowledge of audio and visual education materials as well as a working knowledge of the principles of educational and social psychology and how they apply to a health education program. Ability to assess needs and establish or recommend program priorities and develop goals to achieve these. Ability to plan organize and implement a variety of health education activities. Ability to develop educational materials and media such as pamphlets and video tapes. Ability to present ideas accurately effectively and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers students medical and health professionals representatives of the news media and other community groups. Ability to plan organize and conduct discussion sessions workshops and other health education programs. Ability to collect compile chart and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning and apply it to develop logical program suggestions.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and / or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

With a proven ability to work with college-age students has successfully overseen student education programs demonstrating a thorough understanding of health education theories research and program assessment. Their general knowledge of current and emerging college-age student health problems allows for effective assessment. They possess expertise in designing and implementing surveys and assessment tools coupled with the ability to analyze and report on collected data.

Adept at establishing working relationships with students faculty staff and administrators across campus divisions. Leverages technology such as computers tablets and statistical analysis software for data analysis and online surveys. Has excellent written oral and presentation skills complemented by proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite including PowerPoint Word Excel and Outlook.

Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health with an emphasis on health education Health Education Health Science Public Health Administration Human Services a mental health-related field or equivalent is highly preferred. Holds a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES or MCHES) certification and has over two years of experience overseeing peer education programming and developing peer-to-peer curriculum. Proficiency in statistical software and analysis of raw survey data along with experience working with grants and report writing.

License / Certifications

A valid California drivers license.
