Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
Job Description
The Advanced EMT is responsible for providing basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system in the state of Texas. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation.
Primary Responsibilities
Physical Requirements
Lifting and Carrying
Ability to lift and maneuver 150 lbs without assistance and 300 lbs with assistance.
This includes lifting patients, equipment, and even carrying a stretcher.
Mobility
Ability to walk, stand, kneel, and squat for extended periods, often on uneven terrain or in cramped spaces. This is necessary for patient assessment, treatment, and transport.
Stamina
Capacity to function effectively throughout long shifts, often 12 hours or more, and under physically demanding conditions.
Dexterity
Fine motor skills to perform specific medical procedures, such as inserting an IV, managing airways, or administering medications.
Vision
Adequate vision (with or without correction) to read written documentation, see distant and close objects, recognize colors of traffic signals, and interpret ECGs or other medical readings.
Hearing
Adequate hearing (with or without hearing aids) to understand spoken words, differentiate sounds in a noisy environment, and hear patient sounds like breath and heartbeats.
Coordination
Ability to coordinate the movement of multiple limbs simultaneously, like when performing CPR.
Tolerance
Ability to function effectively under stress, demonstrating a high degree of flexibility, and managing situations that can be both physically and mentally taxing.
Environmental Conditions
Tolerance for exposure to extreme temperatures, weather conditions, hazardous materials, loud noises, and other potentially dangerous situations. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment without impairment.
Driving
In many EMS systems, AEMTs may be required to operate emergency vehicles safely under a variety of conditions, such as during emergency responses and in adverse weather conditions.
Health
Overall good health without any conditions that would restrict the ability to safely perform the duties of an AEMT. Many employers require a physical fitness exam or health clearance before hiring.
