Guardian ad Litem-Become a Volunteer Court Advocate

A Guardian ad Litem (GAL) is a trained volunteer who is appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child involved with their local Department of Social Services (DSS). In court, the GAL serves as an important voice for the child.

Guardian ad Litem (GAL) volunteers are adults who come from diverse communities, cultures and life and work experiences. While no particular experience is required, all GALs share a sincere concern for the well-being of children.

Each child’s case is unique, and the time spent by GALs to perform their statutorily mandated duties will vary as they visit child-clients; conduct interviews; read reports; formulate fact-based, child-focused court reports with recommendation; and testify in court hearings.

The GAL volunteer’s primary responsibilities include :

• Investigating the circumstances and available resources surrounding the child to meet the child’s needs
• Visiting the child regularly and gathering information about them through consistent contact
• Collaborating with other participants in the case
• Recommending what’s best for child by writing court reports and testimony
• Monitoring the case
• Keeping all information confidential
