The Charge Nurse in the Medical-Surgical Unit is a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for supervising and coordinating the clinical activities and patient care on the unit during an assigned shift. This role ensures effective patient care delivery, staff supervision, resource allocation, and compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and quality standards. The Charge Nurse acts as a liaison between staff, physicians, patients, and leadership.
Key Responsibilities :
Coordinate and oversee daily clinical operations of the med-surg unit.
Assign and delegate patient care responsibilities appropriately based on staff competencies and patient acuity.
Ensure safe, high-quality, and timely nursing care is delivered to all patients.
Provide direct patient care as needed.
Serve as a resource, mentor, and clinical expert to nursing staff.
Facilitate clear communication among multidisciplinary team members.
Monitor patient flow including admissions, discharges, and transfers.
Identify and address clinical and operational issues proactively.
Assist with staff scheduling and coverage as needed.
Participate in performance improvement, risk management, and infection control efforts.
Ensure documentation and patient records are accurate and up to date.
Handle patient and family concerns or complaints, escalating as necessary.
Support compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS).
Maintain a safe, clean, and supportive environment for patients and staff.
Qualifications :
Education : Associates or Bachelors Degree in Nursing (BSN preferred)
Licensure : Current RN license in state of practice
Experience : Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience in a med-surg setting; prior leadership or charge nurse experience preferred
Certifications : BLS and ACLS required (or obtained within 6 months of hire)
Skills and Abilities :

Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
Sound clinical judgment and critical thinking
Proficient with electronic health records (EHR)
