Responsibilities
The Lead Battery Systems Engineer collaborates with mechanical and electrical product engineers during design, development, and validation stages of the new product development process to define cell / battery packs and system-level requirements based on use case.Communicate externally with cell / battery suppliers, participate in battery supplier site inspections, develop cell-, pack-, and product-level test plans and validation procedures, and support post-launch sustaining activities and quality projects.Lead activities and plans from multiple simultaneous projects to ensure on-time and on-cost delivery.Engage early in ideation and conceptual design to establish minimum required product performance before competitive bidding.Demonstrate expert understanding of regulatory and certification standards and advise cross-functional teams accordingly.Coordinate with 3rd party certification laboratories and external suppliers to drive technical discussions and implement resolutions quickly.Design, prototype, and qualify battery systems adhering to design and safety best practices to expedite development with limited oversight.Develop characterization and qualification test plans at cell-, pack-, and product-level to support higher product development objectives.Evaluate complex test results, coordinate detailed reports, and provide data-driven recommendations with risk / benefit analysis.Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.Catalog competitive benchmarks and act as a technical liaison between internal and external stakeholders to ensure adherence to design and system specifications.Demonstrate expert written and verbal communication skills; host efficient design reviews and lead technical discussions for internal and external audiences with minimal oversight.Collaborate cross-functionally with team leaders across the organization.Make independent engineering decisions related to battery systems and represent the organization in supplier discussions as a topic expert.Plan, schedule, conduct, coordinate, and execute detailed phases of engineering work related to battery systems within a total program or project; resolve conflicting design requirements and perform extensive root-cause analysis and CAPs.Drive concurrent project and testing activities to achieve on-time delivery.Visit battery / cell or product-level manufacturers and suppliers to evaluate design and manufacturing capabilities and support development objectives.Solicit advanced voice of customer input and translate user requirements into product performance.Attend technical battery trainings, seminars, and conferences to stay current on battery technologies, trends, and regulatory changes; provide guidance on risks and opportunities.Apply analytical skills to material stress analysis, thermal management, and material selection for battery systems.Develop leadership skills to manage a small team of junior battery systems engineers.Maintain and continuously improve engineering documentation related to battery systems, including critical-to-quality requirements, design constraints, testing data, and quality assurance.Minimize negative financial impact during system integration.Develop and communicate should-cost models to support target cost objectives and present cost-benefit tradeoffs.Perform other duties as required within the nature and level of work.Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. Five to seven years of direct work experience with Li-Ion battery design, manufacturing, testing, test plan development, and validating battery solutions to meet product requirements. Expert understanding of Li-ion battery management and charging strategies and circuits. Strong technical, analytical, planning, and organizational skills. Demonstrated experience facilitating complex projects with multiple stakeholders. Ability to adapt to changing priorities under time constraints. Up to 25% international travel.

May occasionally lift and / or move objects up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Salary : Based in Illinois, annual salary range of 130,000–160,000. In addition to salary, competitive benefits are provided as part of the total rewards package. Actual compensation is influenced by factors including skills, experience, and location.
