Summary

The Processing Archivist is responsible for processing and accessioning collections, providing reference services to patrons, promoting the archives, and performing other archival duties as assigned under the general direction of the University Archivist.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Process papers, photographs, audio / video recordings, electronic records, and memorabilia using comprehensive processing plans and best practices.
  • Accessions collections, both recent and previously acquired, applying best practices and standards.
  • Provide reference services to researchers, university stakeholders, community members, and the general public.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Archivist to identify items for digitization and assist in curating materials for the Archives' online digital collection.
  • Maintain accurate and complete descriptions and inventories in the collections management system.
  • Provide archival instruction in classroom and workplace settings to stakeholders and community members.
  • Prepare exhibits for display in the department, on campus, and for traveling exhibitions.
  • Plan, coordinate, and participate in departmental outreach activities, both in-person and virtual.
  • Maintain current knowledge of archival trends and continue professional development.
  • Maintain effective workflows and documentation for archives policies and procedures.
  • Serve on library and university committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience processing collections and providing reference services.
  • Experience with collection management systems such as ArchivesSpace, Archivists' Toolkit, or Archon.
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask, adapt to a changing library environment, and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and complete projects satisfactorily.
  • Availability to work beyond normal office hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends as needed.
  • Physical requirements : able to move medium-weight boxes, books, and heavy book trucks; able to handle materials that may contain dust or microscopic mold spores.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of contemporary metadata standards (Dublin Core, DACS, METS, MODS).
  • Certified Archivist credentials.
  • One year of post-MLS experience in processing collections in an archives, special collections, or museum setting.
  • Supervision

    Graduate assistants, interns, and student workers.
