CLASS TITLE : Corrections\nRegistered Nurse\nDEPARTMENT : Sheriff's\nDepartment\n\nDIVISION : Jail MedicalEFFECTIVE DATE : July 2023\n\nGENERAL PURPOSE\n\nUnder the supervision of Sheriff and / or Chief Deputy and under the direction of\nattending physician, performs routine professional nursing services for inmates housed\nin the Box Elder County Jail and works with physician on the day-to-day management of\nthe medical aspect of the jail facility.\n\nEXAMPLE OF DUTIES (Any one position does not include all of the duties listed : nor\ndo the listed examples include all duties that may be found in positions of this class.)\n

  • Assists the Doctor on duty when visiting inmates; consults with physician on\nmedical matters.\n
  • Identifies physical, social and emotional health needs by using health and social\nhistories; conducts physical examinations and laboratory tests as needed;\ndevelops treatment plans for patients.\n
  • Obtains inmate's medical history and is responsible for the medication and\ninmate medical records and updates; prepares daily medications; distributes\nprescribed medications; follows up to determine effects of medication; provides\ntreatment for minor ailments not requiring prescription or physician review;\nprepares medical charts; records treatments; insures confidentiality of inmate\nmedical records. Documents medical treatment and procedures.\n
  • Evaluates nutritional adequacy and necessary dietary requirements; evaluates\ndental requests; sets up required dental appointments; counsels and evaluates\nminor emotional emergencies; evaluates inmates for Mental Health Department;\nobtains mental health counselors as required.\n
  • Schedules inmate's appointments for transportation to outside medical care\nrequiring medical stability; coordinates changes in living quarters for medical\nreasons.\n
  • Operates a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with all Utah laws\nand regulations.\n
  • Will document medical treatment and is responsible for third party billings and\nprocedures for reimbursable services.\n
  • Perform related duties as assigned.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n1. Education and Experience : \nGraduation from an accredited nursing college or university with an Associate's\nDegree in Nursing and two (2) years of nursing experience\n\nOR\n\nGraduation from an accredited Nursing college with a Bachelor's degree.\nOR\nAn equivalent combination of education and experience in Nursing field.\n2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : \nWorking knowledge of general nursing theory and practice; working knowledge of\nmedication, dosage, and side effects; some knowledge of normal and abnormal\nbehavior.\nAbility to provide skilled nursing care; ability to set priorities and make\njudgements regarding case load; ability to recognize community health needs\nand concerns of patients and to maintain constructive health care relationships;\nability to identify dangers involved with handling inmates; ability to adjust and\ncope with emergency situations; ability to restrain unruly inmates with assistance;\nability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively,\nverbally and in writing; must have the ability to work well with others.\nMust have (or acquire during orientation period) a working knowledge of jail\npolicy and procedures and is responsible for upgrades of medical care policies.\nNeed to have current knowledge on communicable and transmitted diseases\nencountered in corrections facilities.\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS\n\nThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by\nan employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable\naccommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the\nessential functions.\nWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand,\nwalk and talk and / or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to\nfinger, handle or operate objects, controls, or tools; reach with hands and arms; climb or\nbalance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; run and taste or smell.\nThe employee must occasionally lift and / or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision\nabilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral\nvision, and depth perception. Employee must have working knowledge and physical\ncapability to manage safe patient transfers.\nSPECIAL REQUIREMENTS\nMust be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, which includes being State\nBoard certified.\nMust be CPR certified and IV certification is preferred.\nMust have Valid Utah Driver License.\nSELECTION GUIDELINES\nFormal application; reference check; interview with hiring authority.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\n1.
