Pharmacy Technician Role

The Pharmacy Technician plays a vital role in supporting both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy operations. This role includes preparation, dispensing, and management of medications and supplies, ensuring patient safety, and collaborating with healthcare teams to maintain optimal care. The Pharmacy Technician will be involved in a variety of tasks such as unit dose programs, intravenous admixture preparation, inventory management, crash cart replenishment, vaccine distribution, prescription processing, and customer service. This position requires keen attention to detail, the ability to follow procedures, and excellent communication skills.

A Pharmacy Technician's day is fast-paced and multifaceted, encompassing tasks across both inpatient and outpatient settings. The day begins with preparing and dispensing medications, including filling unit-dose carts, compounding intravenous (IV) admixtures, and processing prescription orders. They monitor inventory levels, replenish medications as needed, and ensure emergency crash carts are fully stocked.

Pharmacy Technicians also assist with vaccine preparation and distribution while performing routine maintenance on dispensing equipment. Throughout the day, they collaborate with healthcare teams to resolve medication-related issues, address patient inquiries, and maintain accurate records. Adhering to strict protocols, they ensure the safe and efficient distribution of medications.

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, Pharmacy Technicians handle routine pharmacy functions, including receiving prescriptions in writing or electronically from physicians. They prepare prescriptions by counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and, when necessary, mixing medications. Additionally, they maintain patient profiles, process insurance claims, manage inventory, and prepare medications for inpatient use, including sterile product preparation.

Qualifications

You might be the person we're looking for if you have :

• Education : High School Diploma
• Certification : Current national certification through either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), or the National Health Career Association (NHA) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
• Experience : Preferably at least 2 years of experience in hospital (inpatient) pharmacy settings.
• Language Proficiency : Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
