The Residential Life Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming living environment within the university residence halls. Working under the supervision of the Residential Life Custodial Supervisor and alongside a team of custodial staff and student workers, the custodian performs cleaning, sanitation, and light maintenance in student residences, offices, public areas, and building exteriors. This position plays a critical role in promoting student well-being, health, and comfort in the residential community. These responsibilities may apply to one or multiple residential buildings. Specific assignments may rotate.
General Custodial Duties
• Clean, disinfect, and dust common areas such as lobbies, hallways, lounges, kitchens, TV rooms, chapel, and gym.
• Perform routine cleaning of offices: dust furniture, desks, blinds, cabinets, doors, shelves, and window sills; vacuum/mop floors; empty trash and replace liners.
• Clean and reset dorm and guest rooms between occupants, including surfaces, floors, windows, and furniture.
• Maintain and clean all glass doors, windows, stairwells, and interior doorways.
• Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors in all assigned areas.
Community Bathrooms
• Clean, disinfect, and dust toilets, sinks, showers, dividers, mirrors, and floors.
Kitchen Areas
• Clean and disinfect kitchen equipment and surfaces including sinks, countertops, refrigerators, stoves/ovens, cabinets, tables, and chairs.
Building Exterior & Entrances
• Maintain cleanliness of building entrances, sidewalks, and surrounding areas.
• Clean restrooms, glass doors, and drinking fountains located near or at entrances.
Janitorial & Supply Maintenance
• Keep custodial and maintenance closets clean, stocked, and organized.
• Properly store and care for cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Submit custodial supply requests and work orders to the Residential Life Custodial Supervisor.
• Responsible for the condition and proper use of custodial equipment assigned to the area.
Other Responsibilities
• Move furniture and supplies as needed.
• Assist with room transitions during seasonal occupancy changes (e.g., summer housing, fall move-in). • Follow all university safety procedures and guidelines when using chemicals and equipment (in accordance with SDS requirements).
• Complete other duties as assigned by the Residential Life Custodial Supervisor.
Required Skills
Knowledge and Skills
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and the ability to safely follow Safety Data Sheet (SDS) guidelines.
• Ability to apply common sense and sound judgment in routine problem-solving situations.
• Comfortable using passive vocabulary of 5,000-6,000 words and defining unfamiliar terms as needed.
• Good time management and organizational skills.
• Capable of working effectively around student residents in a professional and respectful manner.
Physical Requirements
• Must be in good physical condition and able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to:
• Stand and walk for long periods.
• Bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs/ladders.
• Extend arms and use fingers/hands for precise work.
• Balance on uneven or narrow surfaces.
• Use repetitive motions and exert physical effort in lifting or moving heavy items.
• Average hearing and vision necessary for communication and task inspection.
• Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions.
Special Requirements
• Must be able to work with or around cleaning chemicals and dust.
• May be exposed to noise, heat/cold, or outdoor conditions during daily work.
Required Experience
Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Three (3) to five (5) years of custodial experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with cleaning procedures, tools, equipment, and chemical safety protocols.
• Basic English proficiency required for reading labels and communicating via email, phone, or text; bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adapt to evolving priorities.
Wage Range: $17.01 - $18.00 per hour
