Director Of Strategic Communications
Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications to lead external communications, focusing on telling the story of GGE's work while amplifying the voices and perspectives of the youth we serve. We seek a strategist and practitioner to effectively communicate GGE's mission and vision by highlighting the work happening across departments, and to help the organization bring a Black feminist perspective to the social, political, and cultural issues impacting Black girls, girls of color, and gender expansive youth.
Your day-to-day :
- 60% - Strategy Design + Brand Management + Messaging
Design strategic communications goals that will be updated annually and aligned to overall organizational strategic priorities
Alongside the Senior Director Team (representing Programs, Impact Policy & Advocacy, and Development), gather and develop stories that reflect and represent the impact of GGE's youth workCreate and craft social media and newsletter content that engages audiences, grows followers, inspires action and conversation, and aligns with the organization's mission, values and point of view
Liaise with all departments Programs, Policy, Impact Hub, Healing Justice, and Development to gain a comprehensive understanding of what's happening across the organization and identify necessary communication assetsCreate messaging that challenges disempowering and stereotypical narratives of Black and Brown girls and gender expansive youth, and instead uplifts powerful + positive expressions of who our young people are in their own words
25% - DevelopmentGather stories that holistically capture and communicate our impact to donorsWrite content to support Development in reporting and seeking out new grant applicationsEstablish & maintain inter- and cross-team processes to ensure awareness and inclusion of various organizational activities to highlight on social and in the newsletterReporting annual impact measures - and creation of new assets to represent GGE's work and impact15% - External Relations and EventsAttend major youth or other partnership events to help capture audio, video, and stories for external communications contentAttend occasional lobbying activities to liaise with press and other stakeholdersWork closely with the Senior Director of Development and the Executive Team to craft and execute a comprehensive strategy around GGE's 25th anniversaryThe Skills You'll Need
Success in the Director of Communications role will require a deep commitment to anti-racist, feminist / womanist / queer, and youth development work. The ideal candidate will also bring the following skills, attributes and experiences :
Passion for GGE's mission, vision, and work7+ years' of broad and progressively responsible experience in the nonprofit development sector, Understanding of strategic communications ability to weave GGE's mission, vision, brand and Theory of Transformative Change (TOTC) into all aspects of external communicationsExceptional writing skills with the ability to convey the organization's voice and point of view to a variety of audiences. Can write newsletters, press releases, talking points, op-eds, etc.A demonstrated track record of managing a digital strategy (social media and website) and organizational digital media accounts.Passion for storytelling and ability to parse out compelling stories from the organization's work and research data.Understanding of narrative strategy and how to integrate that into external communications.Knowledgeable about Black feminist principles, and ability to infuse Black feminist analysis into social and political conversations : both youth-led and intergenerational.Apply a communications lens to all aspects of the work to support base building, program sign-ups and fundraising.Proactive thinker and problem solver can work with various departments to develop communications collateral and anticipates communications outputs for various programs and policy activities.Experience using Hootsuite, Mailchimp, Canva. Experience with digital organizing tools like ActBlue.Experience pitching journalists and media outlets, and ideally a familiarity with New York media.Experience filming and editing short videos for social content.Digital organizing / base-building experience is a plus.Comfortable and interested in working with young people.Visionary thinker and reliable implementer, especially for how to improve and amplify GGE's brand and messaging across all communications opportunities.Strategic and results-oriented, with the ability to shift priorities as needed.Outstanding external and internal communication skills; enjoys working with teams.Strong expertise in data-driven decision-making, project management, and initiative implementation.Experience supporting executive-level staff and comfort with collaborative working relationships.Highly organized, self-motivated, independent worker with strong tactical acumen.High level of proficiency to capture, analyze and report departmental activity.High level of self-awareness and ability to give and receive feedback well.Ability to travel within New York as needed.Desired but not required : Lived experience with school pushout, the criminal legal system, navigating gender, gender identity, and / or racial equity issues.The People
This role will report to the Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff also communicates frequently with all Departments and the Executive Team.

Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) is an intergenerational advocacy organization that works through a Black feminist lens to achieve gender and racial justice by centering the leadership of Black girls and gender-expansive young people of color to reshape culture and policy through advocacy, youth-centered programming, and shifting dominant narratives.
GGE challenges structural forces racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and economic inequality that work to constrict the freedom, full expression, and rights of trans and cis girls, young women of color, and GNCNB youth of color.
