Description :

Emergency Room with approximately 270-320 visits per day.

Busy days may see up to 350 visits.

Non-trauma center with 62 beds plus hallway beds and chairs.

Ratios are 1 to 4.

Charge nurse is present on both shifts and does not take patients unless absolutely necessary.

Approximately 3 ER technicians available per shift to perform EKGs and vital signs.

Weekend requirement is every other weekend.

Holidays require working 2 out of 3 major holidays.

Scrub color is navy blue.

Telemetry equipment is Phillips - nurses must read and interpret telemetry.

No tele techs present.

May need to hold ventilated patients while awaiting respiratory therapy.

Respiratory therapy is available 24 / 7.

Pharmacy services are available 24 / 7.

No on-call requirement.

Shifts available are 7 AM, 9 AM, 11 AM, 3 PM, and 7 PM, all being 12-hour shifts.

No floating to other units required.

Floor-specific orientation is a maximum of 2 shifts.

Common diagnoses include pediatric patients aged 0-12 years in a lower acuity zone.

All nurses will work in various areas with patients ranging from minors to critical care.

High volume of critical acuity patients and ICU admissions from the emergency room.

ER is divided into two sections with dedicated charge nurses for each section.

Large number of paramedic and nursing students rotate through the unit.

Triage nurses are present during peak times, with 3 on duty around the clock.

Cancellation policy : Up to 4 shifts may be canceled during a 13-week assignment.

Charting system used is Cerner.
