The School Resource Officer will be responsible for diverting minor law infractions through school disciplinary avenues and parent counseling. They will develop classroom presentations on various subjects, including substance abuse, youth and violence, motor vehicle law, and safe driving. The officer will be available to address student classrooms and establish trusting relationships with students.

Essential Functions

• Protect the lives and property of Craven County citizens.
• Enforce federal, state, and local laws, and assist school officials with enforcement of applicable board of education policies.
• Investigate criminal activity committed on school property or involving students.
• Meet with Juvenile Court Counselors as necessary.
• Assist school administration with disciplinary duties as requested.
• Counsel students in special situations as needed.
• Answer questions about Juvenile Law and North Carolina laws.
• Schedule classroom time and deliver curriculum concerning law enforcement.
• Assist law enforcement officers from other agencies with investigations.
• Notify a supervisor regarding any potential or dangerous incidents on school property.
• Maintain communication with school administration and supervisors through assigned radio communication.
• Work special events and provide security as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school, completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate, and a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Two years of Law Enforcement experience is recommended.

Additional Information

Although assigned to a particular school, the SRO may be called upon to perform other duties or attend training away from school.

This is a full-time position, and entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply.
