Purpose : The job of a Special Education Teacher is to develop and implement Individual Education Programs that facilitate a special education student’s success in the general education curriculum and environment (academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living).

Supervisor : Principal and / or Special Education Coordinator (except as noted).

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Education : Bachelor’s Degree in General Special Education.
  • Certificates & Licenses : Must hold or be eligible to hold NH Special Education Teacher Certification.
  • Preferable Qualifications : Master’s Degree and / or advanced endorsement and experience as a special education teacher / case manager.

  • Promoting leadership skills of students' families by connecting them with community-based self-advocacy and community resources.
  • Essential Functions :

  • Instructs students to improve their success in academic, interpersonal / social, and daily living skills through the use of research-based interventions; as well as to progress in the general education curriculum.
  • Develops and maintains IEPs, accompanying and required special education paperwork for providing coordinated and cohesive support for students that complies with the district, state, and federal requirements within mandated timelines.
  • Observes students in their general education learning environments.
  • Adapts classroom instructional assignments to provide students with instructional materials that address Individual Education Programs (IEPs) within established lesson plans both in the general and special education settings.
  • Administers and interprets curriculum-based assessments and / or subject-specific assessments for assessing student competency levels and / or developing and monitoring IEPs.
  • Administers developmental assessments as needed for assessing student competency levels and / or developing and monitoring IEPs.
  • Administers, under supervision, first aid, and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.) to provide appropriate care for children as assigned.
  • Advises parents and / or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations and students’ achievements, at least as frequently as report cards are issued; developing methods for improvement and / or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment; and communicate progress on IEP goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates and consults with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources to improve the overall quality of student outcomes and achieve established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and family information and educational records as outlined in FERPA.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment and facilitates the development of effective strategies for use by the student and staff.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, nap times, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment and implementation of IEP goals.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings to convey and / or gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g., IEPs, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, federally required paperwork, etc.) to document student progress and meeting mandated timeline requirements.
  • Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhere to the Educator Code of Ethics, NH laws, and district policies.
  • Responds to emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns and / or directing issues to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Supports and collaborates with classroom teachers to assist them in the implementation of the established curriculum and / or IEPs.
  • Conducts formal and informal assessments, summarizes assessment results through evaluation summary reports, and presents findings to team members to support students and other team members and to progress IEP goals.
  • Coordinates and provides professional development for professionals, administrators, paraprofessionals, family members, and the general community regarding best practices of inclusive education and communication support to provide multifaceted support for students and their families, as needed.
  • Directs special education paraprofessionals for providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Facilitates meetings to increase shared understanding of an issue, shared decision making, planning, problem-solving, writing IEPs, and / or other federally mandated documents.
  • Implements IEPs and coordinates comprehensive related services to provide a coordinated, inclusive program.
  • Models methods and behaviors required to perform classroom and / or subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Presents written and oral information to team members in a clear and organized manner to increase knowledge and skills and to affect attitudes.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Out of District Coordinator / Court Liaison :

  • Attendance at court representing all district students who are there either due to their misconduct (delinquency) or that of their parents (DCYF).
  • Completion and submission of all required documentation for the court.
  • Collaboration and communication with area agencies, GALs, and others as needed.
  • This position reports directly to the Director of Student Services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    The usual methods of performing the job of Special Education Teacher may require the following physical demands :

  • Minimal amount(s) of : lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling.
  • Moderate amount(s) of : repetitive motion(s), bending / squatting. walking.
  • Significant amount(s) of : mental attention / focus, speaking, listening, fine finger dexterity.
