FLSA : Full Time, Exempt
SALARY RANGE : $92,000 - $95,000
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Director, Community Engagement, is accountable for implementing United Way’s place-based Neighborhood Network Initiative, including supporting neighborhood-based community and economic development efforts. The Director, Community Engagement position is a community-facing role and will collaborate closely with the Community Impact, Resource Development, and MarCom teams in alignment with the Dual Approach of the organization. This role will also collaborate with Community Impact colleagues and other organizations across the region to wrap additional resources into Neighborhood Networks, including capacity building, program grants, community development, pro-bono assistance, corporate and community volunteers, government resources, and advocacy efforts.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support 4-5 advanced Neighborhood Networks in maintaining strong collaborative relationships. Developing and implementing annual action plans, aligning human service programs, and driving community-led economic development efforts.
- Manage implementation of annual workplan, including collaborating closely with Neighborhood Network coordinators, key stakeholders, and identifying new opportunities to enhance existing activities through cross-sector partnerships.
- Build and manage relationships with community stakeholders and high-level United Way volunteers to advance economic development projects.
- Work closely with United Way’s Senior Leadership team to ensure continuous improvement is consistently practiced across Networks.
- Provide regional guidance for variances in the model through implementation phases to refine and improve United Way’s practices.
- Work closely with internal teams to create a plan for executing capacity building strategy for Network backbone and partner agencies.
- Maintain relationships and credibility among community leadership, advocates, and residents.
- Actively engage with Neighborhood Networks’ local partners, through in-person participation in events and meetings related to the Neighborhood Network.
- Provide strategic support to Network coalitions in mobilizing government, non-profit, small business, and other community players around shared community goals.
- Collaborate with Community Impact colleagues to determine funding amounts and ensure partners adhere to grant guidelines and deliverables.
- In partnership with Resource Development, identify and win funding to support the Neighborhood Network strategy.
- Collaborate with MarCom and Volunteer Engagement departments to identify marketing and volunteer opportunities within Networks.
- Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the management team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree and / or combination of equivalent employment and education experience and a minimum of 10 years’ experience managing nonprofit partnerships, economic development or urban planning initiatives, community engagement, organizational capacity, needs assessments, and outreach.Proven experience mobilizing sustainable, community-wide engagement efforts in the health and human services arena for underserved communities.Experience with community organizing and advocacy.Established relationships with community-based organizations on the South and / or West Sides of Chicago.Highly organized, attention to detail, ability to multi-task, prioritize, and execute concurrent projects and day-to-day tasks within a fast-paced environment from inception to conclusion.Possess an entrepreneurial spirit, with the ability to work well independently and collaborate within a team.Ability to take in significant amounts of information from various sources and distill key messages that create alignment and consensus internally and externally.Strong presentation skills to various key stakeholders internally and externally.Strong management, leadership, team building, problem solving, critical thinking, and judgment skills.Strong communication skills, including substantive contributions to discussions, drawing upon expertise to amplify work quality.Knowledge of and relationships within the Chicago region nonprofit and philanthropic communities.Valid driver’s license and access to a personal car.Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required.Experience or familiarity with navigating local government preferred but not required.PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
