Water Meter Reader

Under general supervision, performs a variety of water utility customer service duties, including reading water meters and recording consumption and identifying water meter equipment problems.

Responsibilities include :

• Reading water meters on assigned routes; calculating water consumption; determining consistency of meter readings; reporting unusual readings to the supervisor; ensuring meters are functioning properly; inspecting visible plumbing for water leakage; reporting meter or equipment defects to supervisor; completing service orders for damaged or defective meters; ensuring accurate billing of water and sewer consumption to customer and to protect the City from any unnecessary losses.
• Providing water utility customer service including rereading meters when problems are identified or encountered; tactfully responding to citizen inquiries and complaints; ensuring vehicles are in working condition; maintaining equipment; assisting water / wastewater leak crews with flagging, blue staking, and semi-skilled laborer activities when needed.
• Operating a hand-held computer for reading water meters and entering or retrieving data on accounts; performing minor repair on equipment and reporting the need for major repair; performing assigned work under hazardous conditions, moving traffic, and adverse weather conditions; assisting contractors or water / wastewater crews with the installation of meters; thawing water lines and providing alternate sources of water to customers; raising meter barrels when necessary.
