What You'll Do :

The Animal Behavior Support Specialist role involves participation in the ASPCA's comprehensive Shelter Behavior Apprenticeship, designed to give you a deep understanding of animal behavior in shelter settings, combining online and hands-on learning. Upon completion, you'll be working directly with animals and visitors, focusing on behavior monitoring, modification, evaluation, and data collection. Your support will be vital in fostering an environment of collaboration among shelter operations, medicine, and behavior teams.

What You Can Expect :

  • Work primarily at the Recovery & Rehabilitation Center.
  • Complete the Shelter Behavior Apprenticeship, which includes online and hands-on learning with travel requirements.
  • Flexibility to work on days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel up to 20% may be required.
  • The tentative start date for this position is February 9, 2026.

Compensation :

The starting pay for this role will consider factors such as experience and qualifications. The target hiring range is between $31.25 - $32.69, with opportunities for career advancement to Behavior Specialist at a rate of $34.62 - $37.02.

  • Responsibilities :

    Functional Duties (80%) :

  • Create a safe and compassionate environment for animals and clients, employing low-stress handling techniques.
  • Execute assigned behavior modification protocols and document treatment sessions.
  • Assist with evaluations, grooming, and other essential care activities.
  • Monitor animals’ behavioral health and communicate effectively with the team.
  • Administrative and Operational Duties (20%) :

  • Collect data accurately to support both behavior and veterinary needs.
  • Participate meaningfully in all R&R Center and ASPCA meetings.
  • Track work hours and manage related administrative tasks responsibly.
  • Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma or GED required; B.S. or B.A. preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months of hands-on experience with dogs; volunteer work may count.
  • Sofia Yin's Low Stress Handling University Silver-Level certification required within the first six months of employment.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
