Job Description
Loan Officer/Senior Loan Officer

San Francisco/Oakland

January 2026

WHO WE ARE

Community Vision partners with mission-driven organizations across California to secure the spaces that help communities thrive. As a nonprofit community development financial institution (CDFI), we provide flexible financing and strategic advising to help our clients purchase, preserve, and develop social purpose real estate—such as affordable housing, health clinics, and cultural centers.

Grounded in our belief that community ownership of community assets is one of the most powerful tools for cultivating thriving communities, promoting economic justice, and building power, we work to create lasting community assets that enable stability, agency, and self-determination—helping communities build power through place. Learn more about our work.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Community Vision is seeking two mission-driven professionals to join our lending team. These positions are responsible for identifying, structuring and underwriting creative lending solutions in collaboration with our clients, which is central to our efforts to help preserve and create more community-serving spaces. The work of Community Vision’s lending team is primarily focused on providing large loans to support social purpose real estate projects.

More specifically, both positions are responsible for structuring and negotiating loans, conducting thorough written credit analysis, and maintaining strong borrower relationships. They will also contribute to the expansion of lending relationships and development of loan products and processes to better serve affordable housing groups, community development objectives, and nonprofit organizations. The Senior role carries additional responsibilities in product development, business development, and market leadership.

The ideal candidate is a relationship-builder with strong credit fundamentals and a passion for social impact.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Both Loan Officer and Senior Loan Officer will have the same core responsibilities below, with additional responsibilities as outlined for the Senior role.

New Loan Underwriting (Loan Officer - 70%, Senior Loan Officer - 55%)

  • Determine client borrowing needs and negotiate loan structures that appropriately balance client needs and Community Vision’s fiduciary responsibilities.

  • Manage the borrower relationship and experience through Community Vision’s underwriting process, ensuring that Community Vision approval and closing timelines align with borrower expectations and needs.

  • Support new borrowers through the underwriting process, providing education as needed to ensure a smooth customer experience.

  • Prepare written credit memorandum with detailed analysis and recommendations for terms and credit structure, following Community Vision’s loan policy and guidelines.

  • Provide excellent verbal presentations of comprehensive loan packages for review and approval by Community Vision’s Loan Committee.

  • Manage multiple underwriting projects and deliverables simultaneously, including ordering and reviewing third party reports and incorporating into transaction underwriting.

Business Development and Market Leadership (Loan Officer - 15%, Senior Loan Officer - 30%)

  • Identify borrower and product segments where Community Vision’s capital is most needed.

  • Cultivate new borrower relationships and negotiate with internal and external parties to structure loans that meet borrower needs while appropriately mitigating Community Vision’s risk.

  • Attend applicable conferences and sector networking events.

  • Actively contribute to loan process improvement, with the goal of continuously improving clarity and efficiency. Identify opportunities to incorporate industry best practice and emerging approaches, draft proposed changes to process, and help to document and train for team members.

  • Senior Loan Officer - Collaborate with the Manager of Underwriting to develop new lending products and programs that respond to community needs, leverage organization capitalization, complement existing offerings, are financially sustainable, and have metrics for success.

  • Senior Loan Officer - Represent Community Vision as a speaker at conferences and sector networking events, demonstrating market leadership and professional thought leadership

Closing and Asset Management (10%)

  • Work with the borrower, other external parties, and Community Vision closing staff through loan commitment terms and the loan closing process.

  • Assure accuracy of data in Salesforce, including impact data and relevant borrower and loan information.

  • Support Community Vision’s portfolio and asset management, as needed.

General (5%)

  • Participate in internal work groups as needed to support organizational initiatives.

  • Undertake special projects as requested by the Manager of Underwriting.

  • Develop relationships with relevant community and organizational partners.

  • Engage in professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.

  • Other duties as assigned.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Ideal qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, finance or business.

  • 3+ years of previous work-related experience in a similar position (7+ years for Senior Loan Officer).

  • Real estate lending as a credit underwriter or loan officer, preferably with a CDFI or similar organization with significant nonprofit lending experience.

  • Familiarity and experience with community real estate financing programs like New Market Tax Credits (NMTCs), Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs), Historic Tax Credits (HTC), and Program Related Investments (PRIs) is a plus.

  • Experience in CDFIs, impact investing, and/or community/economic development is a plus.

  • Experience in and enthusiasm for process improvement and optimization.

  • Established track record of lending, meeting production goals, and disciplined use of sales tools for tracking opportunities, sales efforts, and client requests.

  • Experience with financial and credit analysis and preparation of credit memorandums for loan approvals.

  • Ability to manage relationships with borrowers using a customer-centric approach, including thorough timely responses to opportunities and client requests.

  • Ability to listen, build productive and positive relationships, and partner with diverse employees and Community Vision stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office/365, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with Salesforce (intermediate proficiency), Google Suite, and Zoom.

  • A demonstrated commitment to community centered change and social impact.
