Assistant General Counsel Litigation
Position Summary :
Leading West Coast company is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel to lead claims management activities as in-house counsel. This role focuses on resolving legal matters efficiently and within budget, safeguarding the companys interests through pragmatic risk assessment, cost control, and targeted resolution strategy.
The successful candidate will oversee litigation and pre-litigation, manage outside counsel, negotiate settlements, establish and monitor budgets / reserves, and ensure consistent reporting. The role also involves translating litigation outcomes into improved compliance programs, identifying emerging risk, and implementing proactive compliance plans.
Beyond claims, the Assistant General Counsel will provide legal support related to landlord / tenant law, regulatory compliance, debt collections, and day-to-day operations. Candidates should be adept at converting complex legal advice into practical, actionable guidance for internal business partners, with a strong collaborative and business-minded approach.
Key Responsibilities :
- Oversee all litigation and pre-litigation matters, including outside counsel supervision, budget management, and settlement strategy.
- Develop / implement litigation budgets, case monitoring, and ensure timely resolution.
- Identify trends, create actionable reporting, develop targeted risk mitigation strategies, and staff training.
- Conduct regular compliance assessments, identify gaps, and coordinate remediation plans.
- Lead investigations of internal complaints and compliance concerns and recommend / execute corrective measures.
- Advise on disputes and regulatory issues.
- Oversee incident resolution to prevent escalation, including management of supporting team.
- Negotiate / draft settlement agreements and lease terminations.
- Develop and deliver legal training to site teams.
Qualifications :
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.Active license to practice law in California and / or Washington, strongly preferred.7+ years of attorney experience, including direct in-house litigation and claims management.Familiarity with legal tools is a plus.Strategic, business-oriented thinker with excellent written / verbal communication skills.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple high-impact matters, and deliver results in dynamic environments.Strong interpersonal skills, analytical ability, attention to detail, and organizational proficiency.
