The Opportunity
Black & Veatch is seeking an experienced Power System Protection Engineer with a preferred 8-10 years of experience to join our Protective Relay Settings Team . The ideal candidate has knowledge of Protection & Control (P&C) design concepts, relay setting calculations / setting file development, relay manufacturer software platforms, and power system analysis & modeling software. In this role, you will have the opportunity to :
- Function as a technical subject matter expert and specialist.
- Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices and client requirements.
- Work with system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM).
- Develop downloadable setpoint files on multiple proprietary relay manufacturer software platforms (SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, etc.).
- Develop and manipulate logic commonly utilized in protection and control schemes.
Locations
The ideal candidate will be located or willing to relocate to Black & Veatch World Headquarters in Overland Park, KS (Kansas City), or one of the following Regional Office Locations : Phoenix, AZ; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Ann Arbor, MI; Raleigh, NC.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical guidance on design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies. Provide guidance to others on projects and disciplines.Ensure compliance with B&V quality program; support continuous improvement and change management efforts.Prepare complex engineering deliverables for large or multiple projects; perform research and develop material / equipment recommendations; manage data for engineering work; perform complex calculations; manage budgets, schedules, and quality; delegate tasks to team members; review work; lead production teams or coordinate multi-discipline activity as needed.Coordinate with internal / external team members on moderately complex projects.Identify client interests and drivers; communicate them to project teams; support business development or pursuit activities.Serve as a technical specialist; mentor and guide project teams; develop and apply advanced engineering concepts; contribute to knowledge management.Participate in performance management, mentoring, and career development; mentor lower-level professionals.May assist with resource management strategy and engineering resources for small groups.Administrative responsibilities may include ensuring policies are implemented, adherence to programs, approving timesheets and expenses.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
8-10 years of experience in Transmission, Distribution, or Power Generation.Experience with Protection & Control design concepts including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring, etc.8 years of experience in development of protective relay settings.Significant experience with system modeling software (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.).Knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies in Transmission, Distribution, and Renewable Substations.Experience with Mathcad and Excel for protective setting calculations.Experience with communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus, etc.).Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV) and its implementation.Knowledge of NERC-PRC standards and other industry standards.Strong written communication and ability to coordinate with teams and clients; proven ability to work in a team.Ability to lead small projects including schedules, budgets, and staffing.Experience supporting proposal development (scope, level of effort, estimates, schedule).Strong leadership skills with a focus on mentoring and developing early-career professionals.Experience in QC / QA; active Professional Engineer (PE) license in state of residence or project needs.Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program.Minimum of 5 years related work experience.Certifications
Professional Engineer License (U.S. PE), preferredWork Environment / Preferences
