Job description

Parks And Recreation Maintenance

Semi-skilled manual labor in connection with general maintenance and upkeep of parks and park facilities. Incumbent will perform a variety of construction and maintenance work, assist, and ensure public safety at the local parks, boat ramps, piers. Incumbent will be responsible for the parking areas at Pine Island and Rogers Park. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.

Examples of Duties include :

  • General maintenance of the splash park facility to include monitoring of the filtration systems, cleaning and restocking of restrooms, and removal of trash.
  • Maintaining the appearance of the park (i.e., removal of trash and debris), including parking lot, beach, boat ramp, showers, picnic area, playground area, volleyball courts, sports field, etc.
  • Providing excellent customer service with the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Performing custodial duties within parks.
  • Performing basic repairs and maintenance on park fixtures, playground equipment and facilities.
  • Repairing a variety of fences.
  • Mowing, trimming, edging sods and watering grounds.
  • Performing field maintenance using small equipment.
  • Performing painting tasks on park amenities and buildings.
  • Trimming and removing trees.
  • May be assigned principally to splash park, pine island or dock worker positions during the high-traffic time frames of the season or as needed and subsequently assigned for general maintenance for the parks during the slower months.
  • Performing minor construction and maintenance on athletic fields and courts.
  • Operating most equipment associated with lawn / turf maintenance.
  • Transporting equipment used in daily activities from site to site.
  • Weekend overtime may be required as well as rotation on-call.
  • Directing vehicles to available docking areas and parking locations / spaces while keeping traffic congestion to a minimum.
  • Raising and lowering flag each day.
  • Regular attendance; weekend, holiday and shift work required.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications include :

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in performing manual labor.
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the Countys discretion. Licenses, certifications, or registrations include :

  • Valid Florida Driver License (or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida) or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle.
  • This position is subject to the Hepatitis B Vaccine when necessary.
  • ICS 100, 200, & 700 required within 90 days.
  • Required competencies include :

  • Knowledge of safe, efficient, and effective use of equipment.
  • Material control in reference to waste, misuse, needs and stock.
  • Ability to direct traffic to parking area after launching and pay stations as required.
  • Control congestive traffic at boat ramp docking or beach parking area.
  • Understand, interpret and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establishes and maintain good working relationships with departments, associates and the general public.
  • Recognizes hazards and enforce standard safety, rules and precautions.
  • Work independently without close supervision and make sound judgment decisions.
  • Physical demands include :

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses), walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, handling, lifting, repetitive motion, speaking, visual acuity, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, eye, hand and foot coordination.
  • Work is heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Environmental conditions include :

  • Works outdoors in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, heavy rains and wind, and vibration.
  • Equipment used includes :

  • All tools of the building trade.
