JOB SUMMARY

There are multiple vacancies within the Health and Human Services department. Candidates need only to apply once; all applications will be screened for the minimum requirements at the highest level they are qualified for. In the case of higher-level vacancies, names from the eligible list will be referred based on qualifying level. For lower-level vacancies, higher level candidates on the eligible list may not be excluded from being referred.

Under general supervision, assists professional staff members engaged in planning, developing, evaluating and providing mental health services for individuals, groups and some patients in an acute state of mental illness; provides services in the development and implementation of treatment programs; and provides assistance to patients in the Mental Health inpatient unit.

Adult Services

Mental Health Workers (MHWs) in Adult Services play a hands-on role in supporting clients with behavioral health needs. Primary responsibilities include transporting clients to and from appointments, providing support during appointments, and assisting with placement transports across California. MHWs collaborate closely with LPS / Forensic staff to coordinate care, schedule appointments, and monitor client well-being. For LPS-conserved clients, MHWs communicate observations to the assigned Public Guardian. All service documentation is completed in the electronic health record system.

Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES)

Mental Health Workers (MHWs) in Psychiatric Emergency Services provide crisis support to individuals experiencing behavioral health emergencies. Key duties include answering the 24 / 7 Crisis / Access Line, de-escalating and triaging callers, and assisting with Mobile Crisis Response deployment. MHWs also gather client information, prepare hospitalization referral packets, track placements, and support outcome data collection. Training is provided in Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Informed Care, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI), and Cultural Competency. Positions are full-time with AM (7 : 00 AM-3 : 00 PM), PM (3 : 00 PM-11 : 00 PM) and NOC (11 : 00pm-7 : 00am) shifts available, including weekends. PM and weekend shifts offer a differential.

Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF)

Mental Health Workers (MHWs) at the Psychiatric Health Facility provide direct care and supervision to clients in a structured, inpatient setting. Responsibilities include monitoring for safety, supporting daily living needs, facilitating groups, obtaining vital signs, documenting in the electronic health record, assisting with transportation, and maintaining cleanliness of the unit. MHWs are trained in de-escalation strategies and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and may participate in team-based safety interventions. The PHF operates 24 / 7 with three shifts : 7 : 30 AM-3 : 30 PM, 3 : 00 PM-11 : 00 PM, and 10 : 00 PM-8 : 00 AM.

Public Health (Better Way)

Mental Health Workers (MHWs) provide support to Better Way Shelter participants and Homeless Services staff. Better Way is a 40-bed shelter that provides services to Sutter County residents over the age of 18 experiencing homelessness. The primary responsibilities of MHWs include completing new participant intakes, conducting room checks, curfew checks, de-escalating situations, flipping units, doing laundry, assisting with meals, and monitoring participant behaviors. Positions are extra hire with AM (7 : 15 AM - 3 : 15 PM), PM (3 : 00 PM - 10 : 30 PM) and Mid (4 : 30 PM - 10 : 30PM) shifts available, including weekends and holidays.

Mental Health Workers may be assigned to Adult, Acute, or Public Health services.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill any future opening(s), including Limited-Term, Part-Time, Full-Time and Extra Help, in this class for up to six months.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Mental Health Worker I

Knowledge of :

Some knowledge of mental health problems of persons served by community mental health programs; knowledge of related community organizations and lines of communication; techniques of support and care for mentally disturbed patients; CPR and first aid administration; an understanding of the principles, practices and methods of individual and group counseling; basic mathematics; standard office equipment; and clerical activities related to an organization's programs and operations.

Ability to :

Work effectively with professional and other staff members in carrying out the work of the therapy team; be certified in CPR and first aid administration; maintain confidentiality of patient / client information; learn and understand factors important to behavior patterns and appropriate intervention techniques for mentally ill clients; take initiative with patient interaction and in maintaining the work environment; establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with individuals and groups; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and maintain records; learn basic principles of department program services and policies; operate standard office equipment; and operate a motor vehicle.

Education and Experience :

Education and experience that would demonstrate the possession of the above knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and abilities would be : Some related course work in the human services field or some experience working with individuals with mental illnesses.

Mental Health Worker II

Knowledge of : Mental health problems of persons served in specific mental health programs; community organizations and lines of communication in a specific area; available community resources and sources of referral; the principles, practices and methods of individual and group counseling.

Ability to : Work effectively with professional and other staff members in carrying out the work of the therapy team; maintain confidentiality of patient / client information; understand factors important to behavior patterns and appropriate intervention techniques for clients with acute mental illness or substance abuse; establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with individuals and / or groups; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and maintain records; operate standard office equipment; may require the possession and maintenance of a Valid California Driver's License.

Education and Experience : Training and experience equivalent to two years of work which would provide insight into individual or group problems such as psychiatric illness, delinquency, alcoholism, drug abuse, old age, or domestic relations and their effect on mental health; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements :

Requires the ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include subduing resisting individuals; ability to see; ability to hear and communicate orally; requires sufficient hand / eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as typing, data entry or use of other office equipment or supplies; ability to operate a motor vehicle; involves VDT exposure.

Disaster Service Workers :

All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and / or County.

License or Certificate :

Must obtain valid CPR certification within six months and maintain valid CPR certification. This classification may require a valid California driver's license.
