The Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB), founded in 1982 by a group of Fort Worth residents concerned about hunger in their community, empowers its community to alleviate hunger and improve health. As Fort Worth has grown to the 12th largest city in the nation, so has the need for the Food Bank, with more than 500,000 people, 1 in 6 adults, and 1 in 4 children, across its 13-county service area struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Children that do not receive sufficient food and nutrition have behavioral issues, are sick more often, and fall behind in school. Tarrant Area Food Bank has grown to meet this need and is the largest non-healthcare, non-education, non-profit in Tarrant County. The food bank distributes 60 million nutritious meals each year.
TAFB is a 501(c)3 organization governed by a Board of 20 Directors, each of whom was selected for their valued perspective and competencies to support the organization’s talent. TAFB is in solid financial condition, consistently operating in the black with no long-term debt. Revenues for FY2023 totaled over $128 million ($96 million of which was the value of donated food and commodities). The organization employs 125 staff and is dependent upon and grateful for the more than 12,000 volunteers, who donated 75,359 hours to support the mission in FY 2022. TAFB’s administration and main campus distribution center are conveniently located near downtown Fort Worth, 7 th Street, and the Cultural District. It also has satellite facilities in Denton (TAFB North) and Parker County (TAFB West).
