Medical Assistant (Per diem) Womens Health, BMC Brighton

Boston Medical Center (BMC) seeks a Medical Assistant to support the Womens Health clinic at the BMC Brighton location. The role focuses on both clinical and administrative duties to ensure efficient patient care flow.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

  • Collaborates with the licensed nurse / clinic manager, as a member of the interdisciplinary team throughout the shift to determine appropriate work assignment and priorities, and communicates status of delegated task completion and outcomes.
  • Monitors patient flow including waiting room activity and communicates wait time updates to patients and nursing staff.
  • Conducts pre?visit chart review and preparations for upcoming visits, including identification and documentation of patient care needs based on clinic guidelines and protocols.
  • Enters orders for labs and tests for the upcoming visit per clinic guidelines.
  • Greets patients in waiting room and escorts them to exam room.
  • Uses recognized and accurate medical terminology and abbreviations for all documentation, avoiding the use of unapproved abbreviations per Hospital policy.
  • Assists with intake process by checking two patient identifiers and accurately collecting / delivering vital signs, chief complaint, and medical / family / social history.
  • Enters allergies and smoking status, documents current medications and prescriptions that need renewal, and obtains immunization records / history.
  • Instructs patients on how to prepare for the provider and anticipates / sets up special equipment and supplies needed for the visit.
  • Administers preventative / population health management screens and questionnaires (e.g., PHQ?2 and other behavioral health screens) and records in the medical record.
  • Arranges refills information for provider approval and downloads glucometer and other device data for provider review.
  • Alerts the provider when patient is ready and communicates abnormalities (e.g., elevated temperature) and updates patient pharmacy information.
  • Collects, labels, sends, and may deliver specimens with appropriate laboratory slips or requisitions.
  • Identifies emergency / crisis situations and initiates appropriate response actions within the scope of role, including immediate communication to the licensed nurse or physician.
  • Under direction of the licensed nurse or designee maintains competence of tasks and performs tasks related to a variety of technical skills (e.g., cast / splint care, glucose finger stick, application of external monitors, routine EKGs, hearing tests, POCT).
  • Provides basic skin care, waste prevention, and wound care inclusive of simple dressing changes and saline irrigations, arranging for a registered nurse to assess wounds.
  • Assists licensed nurse / health team members with minor procedures limited to set?up and breakdown of simple sterile procedures (e.g., sterile biopsy, IUD insertion / removal, pelvic exam).
  • Prints disposition forms and patient education materials and assists with staging selected prior authorization for medication or supplies under direction of nurse manager.
  • Strictly adheres to isolation procedures and performs initial cleaning / decontamination of equipment / materials and instruments.
  • Checks inventories, restocks, replaces, and assembles patient equipment and supplies.
  • Utilizes the care teams population health management registry or other applicable database for preventative care outreach (e.g., review of patient data, reminding patients of test / screening needs).
  • Prepares supply order forms and ensures the supplier is notified of broken or non?functional supplies or equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality and protects patient privacy in all endeavors.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Advanced Clinical Activities

  • Assist with chronic wound treatment, MOHS surgery, excisional surgery, laser treatment, Cool?Sculpting, other cosmetic procedures, urodynamic studies, flow?rate / voiding trials, low?dye taping, phototherapy, PUVA.
  • Perform suture removals and phlebotomy.
  • Clerical Support

  • Gathers and assists patients with registration information, ensuring accurate data entry and updates.
  • Verifies third?party insurance coverage, obtains prior approval, and enters details into the billing system.
  • Collects co?payments at time of service and controls cash per internal policy.
  • Directs patients with financial concerns to staff who can assist with completing application forms.
  • Creates and obtains medical records for patients, distributes copies to appropriate personnel, and assigns medical record numbers.
  • Maintains clinic files and patient records; screens patient charts prior to appointments and verifies lab work, x?ray, and other results.
  • Uses computer terminal for access / input of patient information, lab results, x?ray, and automated requests.
  • Prepares files and other clinic?specific forms and handles clinic mail.
  • Creates cross?booking activities for linked appointments (social services, nutrition, interpreters).
  • Reschedules patients from canceled or bumped clinic sessions.
  • Enters charge codes and updates diagnosis codes into the patient account system.
  • Tracks and arranges for return of borrowed / rented equipment.
  • Maintains equipment logs and records.
  • General Duties

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age?appropriate care to regularly served patient groups.
  • Orient new staff; serve as a resource to float pool staff.
  • Conform to hospital standards of performance, conduct, and patient rights to provide best customer service and patient care.
  • Utilize hospital cultural beliefs and respect attributes as basis for decision making and supporting hospital mission and goals.
  • Advanced Administrative Duties

  • Schedule urgent patients into providers schedules for immediate evaluation.
  • Complete billing batch for advanced clinical activity.
  • Create and maintain special procedure and subspecialty patient lists for reference.
  • Maintain special procedure and subspecialty areas including cleaning, inventory, ordering of special items, and vendor logs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Work Rules, Standards, and Competency Compliance

  • Maintain presentable appearance and wear visible hospital identification badge.
  • Adapt to changing patient and practice unit needs, offering assistance and floating assignments.
  • Collaborate with nurse manager / clinic supervisor to coordinate break periods with unit activities.
  • Act in a manner that supports a positive, collaborative work environment and adheres to policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Resolve interpersonal conflicts constructively and seek assistance when needed.
  • Act on constructive feedback and work toward performance goals.
  • Participate in staff meetings, quality improvement, and educational activities.
  • Maintain technical competency and required certifications (safety regulation, infection control).
  • Attend in?services on new equipment, procedures, and programs; maintain accurate annual education record.
  • Comply with practice standards, policies, protocols, guideline, and regulations (DPH, TJC, Fire Codes, OSHA).
  • Adhere to safety, infectious disease control, and attendance policies.
  • Education and Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED plus successful completion of a medical?assistant program, or successful completion of the second medical?surgical clinical rotation.
  • Equivalent combination of education and healthcare?related work experience.
  • Experience

  • Requires at least two years of previous work experience; experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge and Skills

  • Must pass clinical competency testing.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English effectively.
  • Basic math and quantitative measurement skills (e.g., height, weight, urine output).
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Organizational skills for task prioritization and efficient completion.
  • Accurate interpretation of basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions based on departmental policies.
  • Basic computer proficiency and data entry skills.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality protocols for sensitive information.
