We are seeking an experienced Water-Based Mud Engineer to support operations at a small mud plant, providing hands-on mud engineering, fluid maintenance, and customer support for drilling operations. This role is responsible for designing, maintaining, and optimizing water-based drilling fluids while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
The ideal candidate is technically strong, adaptable, and comfortable working in a lean operation where engineering, plant support, and field service responsibilities overlap.
Key Responsibilities
Design, mix, and maintain water-based drilling fluids to meet well and customer specifications
Monitor mud properties including density, viscosity, gel strengths, fluid loss, pH, and solids content
Perform routine mud testing and make real-time treatment recommendations
Oversee mud plant operations, including batching, chemical additions, and inventory usage
Ensure proper handling, storage, and documentation of mud products and chemicals
Provide field and customer support, including troubleshooting mud-related issues at the rig site
Prepare daily mud reports, treatment logs, and inventory documentation
Work closely with drilling supervisors, company representatives, and plant personnel
Maintain compliance with company procedures, MSDS / SDS requirements, and environmental regulations
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to fluid performance and cost efficiency
Assist with plant housekeeping, equipment maintenance, and general operational support as needed
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required; technical degree or formal mud school preferred
Proven experience as a Water-Based Mud Engineer
Strong working knowledge of water-based drilling fluid systems and additives
Ability to interpret lab results and make accurate treatment recommendations
Familiarity with drilling operations and rig-site expectations
Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
Ability to work independently in a small-team environment
