About the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB)

The Northwest Tribes have long recognized the need to exercise control over the design and development of health care delivery systems in their local communities. To this end, they formed the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (also referred to as NPAIHB or "the Board") in 1972.

Guided by a vision of "Health and Wellness for the Seventh Generation," NPAIHB is a 501(c)3 designated (non-profit) organization and Tribal organization, P.L. 93-638, under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA) serving the 43 federally recognized Tribes in the states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington (Northwest Tribes). Tribes become voting members of the Board through resolutions passed by their governing body. Each member Tribe designates a delegate to serve on the NPAIHB Board of Directors.

Led by our Board of Directors, NPAIHB's mission is to "eliminate health disparities and improve the quality of life of American Indians and Alaska Natives by supporting Northwest Tribes in their delivery of culturally appropriate, high-quality health programs and services." We have a staff of over 120 professionals dedicated to advancing Tribal health for the 7th generation in the Pacific Northwest.

Position Summary

The Cancer Project Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for coordinating and supporting the Northwest Tribal Comprehensive Cancer Project (NTCCP) workplan, coalition, and assisting NPAIHB member tribes with cancer control activities.

The Coordinator must have ability to work with minimal supervision, exercise initiative, and make recommendations in coordination with the manager and director of the NTCCP.

This position coordinates the activities of the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board's Northwest Tribal Comprehensive Cancer Project. The Team consists of 3 public health professionals, the Project Director, NTCCP Manager and the NTCCP Coordinator, who are committed to reducing cancer burdens for American Indian and Alaska Native people in the Northwest (OR, WA, and ID) through improved access to prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivor support.

The Coordinator reports to the Cancer and Tobacco Projects Director. This scope of work is housed within the NW Tribal Epidemiology Center Division.

This position is based at NPAIHB's offices in Portland, Oregon. Local travel and / or overnight travel outside of the area is required approximately 20% of the time.

Essential Functions

Cancer Project Coordinator Functions

• Provide NTCCP support in alignment with NPAIHB Strategic Plan
• Support the delivery of NTCCP's Cancer Coalition development and implementation for the NW Tribal Epidemiology Center, and for NPAIHB programs, including the NTCCP, and the CDC grant, along with future projects and services
• Participate in and supports all NPAIHB's NTCCP related grant meetings and program discussions
• Support the NPAIHB's NTCCP 20 Year NW Tribal Comprehensive Cancer Plan, health education materials, website, and other media development, along with NPAIHB staff, Tribal partners, and consultants
• Coordinate NTCCP coalition meetings, training, communications, and conferences involving tribal partners, stakeholders, and partners both virtually and in person
• Provide technical assistance to NTCCP tribal cancer coalition : share program information, education, prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship data and resources with the tribal program and coalition partners
• Support tribal requests for in-person event support, trainings, or other cancer focused activities
• Maintain and distribute education materials with coalition members, partners, staff, and other CDC-funded cancer programs
• Carry out updated NTCCP priorities throughout the year, as directed by Northwest Tribes, and through the NPAIHB Strategic Planning process and / or annual federal and state policy priorities
• Work closely with supervisor to support the identification of Northwest, federal, and state policy priorities related to NTCCP

The worker is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.

Travel Requirements

Local travel is required (10% of time). Overnight travel outside of the area required (20% of the time). Attendance at quarterly NPAIHB Board Meetings is occasionally required. These meetings are held both locally and hosted by our member tribes on a rotating basis, taking place during the third or fourth weeks of January, April, July, and October, and typically require a minimum stay of two overnights per meeting.
