Engineering Manager

The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization is responsible for delivering and maintaining the tools and services engineers use every day to drive our cars forward. Our goal is to ensure our AV engineers and others have world class tools and a seamless development experience so that they can focus on the problems that matter most in their domain.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager with an extensive background in build tooling, experience using a variety of developer tools and technologies, and who is passionate about developer productivity. As a leader on this team, we are looking for someone who cares deeply about the technical development of other engineers on the team and can effectively balance the needs and priorities of the business, our users, and the growth of our engineers.

Build Platform owns creating the build system and tooling that supports our AV and AI developers. We use Bazel in front of an in-house remote Bazel executor and content addressable storage to provide a premier build experience at Cruise. Our team is constantly on the lookout for optimizations and new tooling that improves our product. GM AI developers are heavy users of Python and Docker. The speed at which they can iterate directly impacts the rate at which our AVs improve. The tooling and workflows that Build Platform provides are central to the productivity of our AI developers. Improvements in this space quickly lead to enormous impact for Cruise.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

• Lead the team responsible for improvements to our C++ / Python / AI development ecosystem and workflows, which have a measurable and direct impact on engineering productivity.
• Collaborate with engineers across the company to understand and support their development workflows.
• Own technical projects from start to finish and be responsible for major technical decisions and tradeoffs.
• Drive complex projects that span teams, with many partners and customers.
• Effectively drive planning, code reviews, and design discussions.
• Contribute impactful projects to the team's roadmap, and work to load balance across the team with respect to motivations and career needs.
• Thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment where impact is a result of your efforts and where your contribution is highly visible.
• Drive software engineering best practices both within our team and across engineering.
• Mentor and drive career conversations for engineers on the team.
• Conduct technical interviews with well-calibrated standards and play a crucial role in recruiting activities.
• Be a positive contributor to our team culture.

The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

The salary range for this role is $200,000 to $285,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
