Job description

Veterinary Emergency Doctor - Job Description

Compensation :

  • Base Salary : $160,000 + 22% production bonus (total earnings ranging from $200,000 - $300,000 annually)
  • Continuing Education (CE) : 100% covered, including online and in-person courses, plus $3,500 for CE-related travel expenses

Shifts :

  • Hours : 7 : 00 AM 7 : 00 PM and 7 : 00 PM 7 : 00 AM
  • Swing Shifts : Flexible hours (e.g., 10 : 00 AM 10 : 00 PM, 2 : 00 PM 2 : 00 AM, 4 : 00 PM 4 : 00 AM)
  • Shift Frequency : 156 shifts per year (approximately 3 shifts per week, 12-13 per month)
  • Team Size : 3-4 doctors per shift
  • Locations :

  • Greater Chicago Area (Schaumburg, Buffalo Grove, Naperville, South Loop)
  • Schaumburg : 6-8 new sites opening in January 2025

  • Most hospitals have 10 doctors and 3 leadership roles : Medical Director, Hospital Manager, and Nursing Manager.
  • Required Skills & Experience :

  • Education : DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.
  • Experience : 1 year of emergency or critical care experience preferred but not required.
  • Exotic Animal Experience : Preferred, but willingness to treat exotics is required.
  • Computer Skills : Basic proficiency in practice management, electronic medical records (EMR), and collaboration software.
  • Communication Skills : Ability to read, speak, and hear clearly to understand and complete tasks. Must communicate professionally in person and over the phone.
  • Surgical Skills : Willingness to learn and perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
  • Availability : Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis.
  • Essential Functions & Responsibilities :

  • Medical Consultation : Answer medical questions over the phone.
  • Emergency Triage & Treatment : See patients immediately as part of the veterinary emergency triage process.
  • Diagnostics : Perform physical exams and diagnostic tests (e.g., ultrasounds, x-rays, bloodwork, biopsies).
  • Diagnosis & Treatment Plans : Develop and communicate diagnostic and therapeutic plans to clients.
  • Estimates & Records : Prepare and present treatment estimates and maintain accurate medical records.
  • Surgical Procedures : Perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
  • Client Education : Educate clients on aftercare and preventative measures as necessary.
