Summary

The primary function of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is to assist supervising physicians in providing direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care. Demonstrate care that is effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of wellness. Counsel and educate patients and their families about disease and illness. This APP position will function both in the outpatient clinic setting and the OR as a first or second assist when required. This position is an MDACC position but will split clinic time between Harris County's LBJ Hospital and MDACC's main campus. The split time will be determined in cooperation with the Urology faculty member covering LBJ and the Urology Mid-Level leadership. The APP will work under the direction of MD Anderson staff.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in Urology, Surgery, and / or Oncology. We also welcome applications from highly motivated new graduates who demonstrate a strong interest in surgical specialties, including those who have completed clinical rotations in surgical area. Will consider APPs who have experience working in communities with limited access to care.

For APRN candidates : RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) certification is required, as this position includes support in the operating room.

Candidates must be flexible : willing to travel between the Texas Medical Center and LBJ Hospital as part of their clinical responsibilities.

Key Functions

Obtains medical history and performs physical examinations on patients. Interprets diagnostic tests and radiographic results, and develops management plans in collaboration with faculty physicians. Takes responsibility for patient assessment, triage, and therapeutic management as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team. Documents all patient encounters appropriately.

Reviews and / or orders diagnostic tests and imaging studies. Formulates and manages patient treatment plans and monitors outcomes.

Performs as first or second assist in operative cases, demonstrating fine motor skills and manual dexterity.

Performs procedures, prescribes treatments, and signs prescriptions in accordance with institutional and state regulations. Screens physician calls and provides education to patients and families regarding care and available resources.

Collaborates on research projects, contributes to protocol development, and applies research findings to clinical practice.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

REQUIRED : Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant

Licensure / Certification

REQUIRED : Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED : Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

PREFERRED : American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
