Summary / Objective
The Optometric Technician Clinical Coordinator is a key position responsible for optimizing clinical workflow and maintaining high standards of patient care and operational efficiency. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), this role places a strong emphasis on the training, development, and ongoing competence of optometric and ophthalmic technicians.
The Clinical Coordinator serves as a mentor and educator, designing structured onboarding programs, facilitating continuous training, and ensuring that all technicians are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to provide exceptional care and support within a fast-paced clinical environment. Additionally, the role oversees equipment maintenance, quality assurance, and compliance, while supporting daily clinic operations and interdepartmental collaboration.
Office Hours :
Monday 8 : 00 AM to 6 : 00 PM
Tuesday 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM
Wednesday 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM
Thursday 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM
Friday 8 : 00 AM to 4 : 30 PM
Saturday 8 : 00 AM to 12 : 00 PM (as needed)
Essential Functions
- Lead the training, education, and professional development of all optometric technicians.
- Create, implement, and regularly update onboarding programs, training manuals, and clinical competencies.
- Conduct hands-on clinical training sessions, workshops, and skills assessments.
- Identify individual and team learning needs and develop tailored growth plans.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning, clinical excellence, and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Stay current on industry standards, technologies, and best practices to ensure training content remains relevant and effective.
Key Responsibilities :
Leadership & Team Oversight
Supervise, mentor, and guide the clinical support team in daily responsibilities.Set clear expectations, coach for performance improvement, and conduct regular evaluations.Serve as a role model in clinical excellence and professional conduct.Clinic Operations Management
Coordinate daily clinic flow, technician assignments, and staffing to ensure efficient patient throughput.Monitor and resolve workflow issues or scheduling conflicts.Communicate effectively with the leadership team to support operational goals.Communicate with vendors and reps to ensure each location has up-to-date products and supplies.Advanced Clinical Support
Perform advanced ocular assessments and diagnostic tests, including :o Visual acuity testing
o Autorefraction
o Tonometry
o Retinal imaging and related diagnostics
Assist optometrists during examinations and minor procedures.Equipment Maintenance & Calibration
Oversee routine cleaning, calibration, and minor repairs of clinical and diagnostic equipment.Maintain accurate logs and documentation of maintenance schedules.Coordinate vendor support or service when necessary to minimize downtime.Patient Education
Educate patients on contact lens handling, general eye care, and treatment instructions.Support patients with eyewear and product selection when appropriate.Compliance & Safety
Enforce all safety protocols and ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control regulations.Maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment at all times.Quality Assurance
Perform periodic audits and quality control checks to ensure high standards of care.Review and update clinical protocols in collaboration with leadership and clinicians.Cross-Department Collaboration
Work closely with optometrists, front office staff, and administration to maintain seamless clinic operations.Provide feedback and reporting to the COO regarding staffing, operations, and training outcomes.
