Interim Director of Operations and Development - Patagonia Regional Times

The Patagonia Regional Times is a non-profit newsroom serving three rural communities in southern Arizona. We produce a free monthly print edition 10 times a year, a weekly e-newsletter and breaking e-news, with an estimated readership of over 2000. Our annual budget is $175,000. Since our founding in 2009, our mission has been to be a reliable and engaging source of news for the communities of eastern Santa Cruz County – open to all views, focused on local issues, written and edited by local people, and providing a platform for community education and involvement.

The PRT has a unique model of operation of volunteer community journalists, an active board of directors, and three part time employees.  Our staff executive has for years held the dual positions of Managing Editor and Executive Director. She is now ready to reduce her responsibilities and focus on the editorial side of the organization.  The board of directors has decided to separate the positions to include a fourth staff member, with an organizational structure of two staff in collaborative leadership positions, both reporting to the BOD.  We are calling the new position Director of Operations and Development rather than Executive Director.

General Responsibilities :

Financial Management and Fundraising : Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

Organizational Mission and Strategy : Works with the Managing Editor, staff, and Board to ensure the mission of the PRT is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.

Organizational Operations : Establishes employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and day-to-day operations.

Specific Responsibilities :

• Coordinate day-to-day business operations with other PRT staff
• Works with the Coordinator of Operations and Development in successfully orchestrating the fall fundraising campaign, NewsMatch
• Works with out-going and in-coming board treasurer to create the 2026 budget
• Reviews monthly financial and dashboard reports
• Reports to BOD at monthly board meetings either in person or ZOOM
• Performs an organizational review and needs assessment including current staff positions, policies and fund-raising strategies
• Assists in the writing of grants
• Assists in promotion of board member recruitment and engagement
• Works with Coordinator of Operations and Development in increasing advertising revenue, formalizing a Sponsorship program, and implementing a new Emergency Alerts service.
• Assists in the hiring of a permanent Director of Operations and Development, including collaborating with the Managing Editor to draft job descriptions for both positions
