Firefighter / EMT Position
The New Berlin Fire Department was established in 1954 by town residents dedicated to serving the community. In 2001 the NBFD began the transition from a volunteer to combination department to meet the growing needs of the city. The department has continued to expand our current staffing which currently includes 54 full-time sworn personnel, and two civilian employees. Full-time line personnel work a 48 / 96 shift schedule responding to approximately 5,000 calls annually. Our personnel are highly trained and motivated individuals who are consistently looking at ways to improve our service delivery. Through education, training, and statistical data collection we are continually analyzing how to best provide services to the citizens of New Berlin in a cost-effective manner. The Hiring Process : All candidates will be required to submit their applications through NeoGov by 4 : 30PM CST December 19th, 2025. Candidates are encouraged to complete their application early. Incomplete applications will be withdrawn from consideration. Candidates with complete applications on file will proceed to the written examination to be administered at the NBFD Administrative Offices 16300 W National Ave, New Berlin, WI 53151. Dates to be determined based on completed applications. Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited to interview with the Fire Department Command Staff and Local 4724 personnel. Dates to be determined. Following a background investigation, a conditional offer of employment may be extended which will be contingent on a drug-screen, medical evaluation, and a psychological assessment. The New Berlin Police and Fire Commission will interview all candidates that make it through the final stages of the hiring process. The New Berlin Police and Fire Commission will place acceptable candidates on a certified eligibility list.
Lateral Transfer Program : Although prior fire service experience is not required, the City of New Berlin cooperatively worked with the New Berlin IAFF Local 4724 to contractually agree on a lateral hire program. Under this agreement, any full-time firefighter from Wisconsin or another state who holds State of Wisconsin reciprocity may receive a starting annual salary and a vacation allowance commensurate with their years of experience as a full-time firefighter. Beyond those contractual agreements, lateral hire will be required to comply with all the same processes as other new hires.

Working Environment and Physical Demands : Work is performed in a variety of settings including fire stations, non-emergency and emergency scenes, emergency response vehicles; and work may involve off-duty recall for major emergencies. The environment ranges from routine to emergency settings with unusual modes of communications, extreme noise, discomfort and hazard. The emergency environment may require the performance of hazardous tasks under conditions that require strenuous exertion with limited visibility and the physical ability to utilize all protective turnout equipment including wearing self-contained breathing apparatus. Potential exposure to hazardous or toxic chemicals and gases, extremes in temperature, cramped surroundings, heights and infectious diseases.
