Environmental Game Designer

Salary Range : $140k to $180k

Responsibilities

  • Own the implementation and optimization of assets in Unreal Engine 5, focusing on performance.
  • Own the end-to-end technical deployment of assets into game environments, ensuring consistency, performance, and visual fidelity.
  • Define and uphold technical art requirements, including UV mapping, shader / material setup, draw calls, LOD systems, and streaming budgets.
  • Identify optimization opportunities across memory, GPU performance, and asset workflows for open-world or large-scale multiplayer environments.
  • Specialized tech art skillset that you can implement directly yourself with the highest quality output. Animation is the ideal, but open to other specialties like 3D, VFX, SFX.
  • Knowledge of procedural content generation (PCG) and how to create optimized game ready assets into these frameworks to enable large-scale, data-driven world-building.
  • Collaborate with Level Design and World Building teams to ensure gameplay, narrative, and visual direction align.
  • Troubleshoot art pipeline issues and implement creative technical solutions that balance beauty and performance.
  • Create and implement high-quality 3D assets (hard surface and organic) in Unreal Engine 5, with strong understanding of modeling and material workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Technical Artist or Environment Artist in game development (AAA or indie).
  • Deep Unreal Engine 5 knowledge, with hands-on experience deploying performant assets, building performant materials, with an understanding of Nanite and the PCG framework.
  • Familiarity with performance profiling, asset streaming, and LOD management in large-scale game environments.
  • Proficiency in Animation, 3D modeling, texturing, and asset optimization using tools like Maya, Blender, ZBrush, Substance Suite, and Photoshop.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work across disciplines (Art, Design, Engineering).
  • Ability to document workflows and collaborate with teams to improve pipeline efficiency.
  • Passion for pushing the boundaries of technical art to create immersive, scalable worlds.
