Overview
We are seeking an Ophthalmologist to join our team in Columbia, MO at the VA. At the VA, your work will carry purpose as you provide care to Veterans while enjoying strong federal benefits and stability.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements :
- United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training : Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
- Approved residencies : (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME / AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a limited scope of practice under supervision
- Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred Experience : Board certification in Ophthalmology preferred; board eligibility accepted
- Candidate will be expected to supervise Ophthalmology residents and meet ACGME eligibility requirements related to supervision

- Physical Requirements : Pre-employment physical required
- Physical demands include lifting (15-44 pounds), pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing for several hours, kneeling, and rapid mental-muscular coordination
- Near vision correctable to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision 20 / 20 in one eye and 20 / 40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing aid permitted
Duties
Make preliminary diagnoses, direct and provide treatment, arrange for specialized care or patient referral as requiredTrain and stay familiar with diagnosis and state-of-the-art management of comprehensive ophthalmic disordersProvide comprehensive ophthalmology care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-upConduct outpatient clinics; review patients' medications, diet, therapy course, adherence to management plan, and patient observationsModify management plans as indicated; instruct and counsel patientsPerform ophthalmologic procedures and provide ophthalmic care to correct or treat various conditions; supervise retinal laser proceduresPerform and supervise ophthalmologic surgical interventionsDocument services through appropriate notes (History and Physical, Progress notes, Procedure notes)Serve as a consultant to primary care physicians and accept referrals and outpatient consultations from other providersFunction in a teaching capacity by educating patients, staff, and health professional trainees in assessment, treatment, management, and evaluation of ophthalmologic disordersRefer patients as appropriate and work closely with allied health professionalsParticipate in Surgical Department Quality Assurance and Peer Review programsAttend required staff meetings and communicate up and down the chain of command; assist with issue briefs related to adverse patient outcomes as directedClinical Management including indirect patient care : open encounter and open consult maintenance; CPRS documentation requirementsMaintain involvement in matters concerning clinic productivity, performance measures, quality and patient safety, and process improvementsPerform other duties as assigned by the Section Chief, Chief of Surgery, or clinical leadership to meet organizational needs#J-18808-Ljbffr
