The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Sustainability & Resilience Intern in the Department of Sustainability and Resilience (DSR). Under the direction of the Director of Sustainability Projects, the Sustainability & Resilience Intern will support the department's various programs (including Zero Waste, Lakes & Ponds, Smart Energy Advice, Resilience, and more) while learning about sustainability work in a municipal context. The individual in this role will assist DSR staff with a wide range of activities, including planning and managing public events, research, data analysis and communications. This is a 12-month, part-time (on average 15hrs / week position. This is an in-person (not remote) position. The schedule may include evening and weekend shifts to attend community events.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS :
- Assist at education and volunteer events organized by the department. Engage residents in discussion on sustainability, with table activities and informational brochures. Set up and break down tables and tents.
- Assist with the distribution of the educational brochures to different municipal locations, community organizations, and more.
- Conduct initial research on topics related to Sustainability & Resilience work guided by the DSR staff and / or the Green Worcester Advisory Committee.
- Assist with Zero Waste program's operational activities, such as surveying WooBins (public dual stream waste bins), placing stickers on bins, etc.
- Assist with DSR's online content. Draft blog posts for the Green Worcester dashboard.
- Develop project summary documents.
- Support other DSR initiatives as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Understanding of and strong interest in the principles and values of the Green Worcester Sustainability and Resilience Strategic Plan.Ability to effectively communicate and engage with community members and diverse populations.Strong time management skills and attention to detail.Ability to be self-motivated and to work independently when needed.Ability to maintain professionalism under all circumstances.Ability to work outdoors under different weather conditions.Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.Regular on-site attendance is required.Ability to travel to events and transport materials to and from events.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
High School Diploma or equivalent.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Valid Driver's License and access to reliable transportation.Excellent computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and internet.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Working towards obtaining a Bachelor's Degree or a Master's degree.One (1) year of experience in environmental studies, zero waste, community planning, or other related fields.One (1) year of experience working directly with the public.Proficiency with Canva or similar digital content design software.Proficiency with Constant Contact or other outreach channels.Worcester resident.SALARY : $18.00 hourly, part-time, temporary position.
