Job Description

The University of Nevada Reno is currently recruiting for two Grounds Supervisor 1 positions within the Facilities Maintenance Services (FMS) Department. Both positions are responsible for overseeing grounds maintenance operations in their defined areas supervising and training staff performing administrative duties and supporting special projects and events. One position will focus on general landscape maintenance and the other on irrigation and trash / recycle operations.

Both positions will perform the following job duties :

Supervise and work directly with grounds maintenance staff and student workers; coordinate and delegate tasks and responsibilities;

Complete performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback regarding performance conduct attendance and leave; complete and file incident reports;

Maintain confidentiality address conflicts promptly and document discussions;

Lead by example and foster teamwork;

Provide training on equipment use landscape maintenance standard operating procedures policies and general practices;

Serve as essential personnel during emergencies and perform standby duty as needed;

Monitor contract work;

Work in the field daily and perform inspections ensuring the completion of landscaping projects and maintenance duties;

Serve as a key member of the snow removal team; operate machinery and snow removal tools;

Maintain Outlook calendars for leave and scheduling;

Purchase organize and distribute supplies; obtain approval from direct supervisor before making purchases; and

Other duties as assigned.

Grounds Supervisor 1 - General Landscape Maintenance Role

In addition to the above duties include (but are not limited to) :

Lead beautification efforts including floral displays and landscape bed restoration;

Manage trash duties by inspecting receptacles cleaning and replacing damaged ones and ensuring campus cleanliness; and

Coordinate and oversee special projects.

Grounds Supervisor 1 - Irrigation and Trash & Recycle Role

In addition to the above duties include (but are not limited to) :

Coordinate daily tasks; lead routine project and emergency work;

Maintain accurate inventory levels;

Comply with industry standards for grounds maintenance;

Supervise and lead trash and recycle operations;

Lead special projects such as landscaping demos and irrigation system installations;

Maintain Outlook calendars for leave and scheduling; review new work requests daily;

Recommend projects labor equipment tools and materials to support unit goals; and

Plan and assign staff for annual and special events.

Qualifications

This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent education and one (1) year of experience supervising a small work unit performing grounds maintenance or maintaining repairing or constructing irrigation systems; OR

One (1) year of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker V in Nevada State service; OR

Two (2) years of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker IV in Nevada State service; OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066 this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

A valid Class C drivers license or higher operators license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

A 30-hour Occupations Safety and Health Administration training course within one year of employment.

A Pesticide Application Certification within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with strong administrative skills are encouraged to apply.

Candidates with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite are encouraged to apply.

Candidates with experience in email communications are encouraged to apply.

Physical Demands

This job requires working with and around hazardous materials containing solvents; frequent lifting climbing and moving in awkward or high locations; and exposure to hot and cold temperatures while working outside.

This position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and / or pulling; exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and / or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently and / or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

This position requires the ability to see hear and communicate through speech.

Schedule

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6 : 00 am to 2 : 30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may be able to elect an alternative work schedule.

This position is part of the Facilities Services Weather Essential Personnel and may be required to report to work for their regularly scheduled shift without any phone / cell phone notification; and is subject to a variable workweek schedule.

This position is designated as Essential the event of a campus emergency special event closure to maintain campus safety or building operations this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.

Compensation Grade

Grade 28

In classified service salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment the candidates qualifications internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
