The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) / Infection Control Nurse supports the Director of Nursing in overseeing the daily operations of the Nursing Department to ensure the highest quality of care for residents. This dual role includes managing and monitoring the facility’s Infection Prevention and Control Program in compliance with state and federal regulations. The ADON / Infection Control Nurse provides leadership, education, and guidance to nursing staff while promoting best practices in infection prevention and resident care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Leadership & Nursing Administration :
Assist the DON in planning, organizing, and directing the overall operations of the Nursing Department.
Support and participate in recruitment, training, evaluation, and supervision of nursing staff.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and facility policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) programs.
Monitor staffing patterns and make recommendations to ensure adequate coverage and resident safety.
Act as DON in their absence.
Infection Prevention and Control :
Develop, implement, and maintain an effective infection prevention and control program.
Monitor infection rates, conduct surveillance, and analyze trends to identify and prevent outbreaks.
Provide staff education on infection prevention, hand hygiene, isolation protocols, and PPE usage.
Ensure compliance with CDC, CMS, and Pennsylvania Department of Health infection control guidelines.
Collaborate with the medical director and interdisciplinary team on infection control strategies and resident care plans.
Maintain accurate infection control records and reports for regulatory compliance.
Resident Care & Clinical Oversight :
Monitor resident care to ensure quality outcomes and adherence to individualized care plans.
Support nursing staff with clinical decision-making and problem-solving.
Participate in rounds, care conferences, and audits to ensure best practices in care delivery.
Regulatory & Compliance :
Prepare for and participate in state and federal surveys and inspections.
Maintain knowledge of current long-term care regulations and infection control standards.
Ensure timely completion and submission of required reports and documentation.
Qualifications :
Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Pennsylvania (required).
Minimum of 2–3 years of supervisory experience in long-term care or skilled nursing (required).
Infection Prevention and Control certification (IPCO) preferred
Strong knowledge of CMS, CDC, and PA DOH infection control standards and nursing regulations.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and residents’ families.
