This role is part of the Excess Casualty Team within the Claims Division. Responsibilities include actively managing commercial claims for primary and excess casualty accounts across various lines of business, and providing oversight to underlying carrier claims handlers.

Base pay range

$107,900.00 / yr - $160,000.00 / yr

Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess coverage issues, draft coverage position letters, and retain coverage counsel when necessary, while reviewing coverage counsel's opinion letters and analysis.
  • Develop and implement strategy relative to coverage issues that align with overall handler strategy.
  • Develop and implement timely and accurate resolution strategies to mitigate indemnity and expense exposures.
  • Maintain consistent communication with claims carriers, underwriters, defense counsel, program managers, and brokers regarding developments and outcomes.
  • Investigate claims and review insureds' materials, pleadings and other relevant documents.
  • Identify and review each jurisdiction's applicable statutes, rules and case law.
  • Review litigation materials including depositions and expert reports.
  • Analyze and direct risk transfer, additional insured and contractual indemnity issues.
  • Retain counsel when necessary and direct counsel in accordance with resolution strategy.
  • Analyze coverage, liability and damages to assess and recommend reserves.
  • Process large amounts of complex information, distill key issues and decision points, and communicate concisely verbally and in writing.
  • Prepare and present written / oral reports to senior management outlining issues influencing evaluations and recommending reserves.
  • Travel within the United States to attend mediations, trials and other proceedings relevant to claims resolution.
  • Negotiate resolution of claims and select appropriate broker structures.
  • Maintain a diary of all claims, post reserves in a timely fashion, and expeditiously respond to inquiries from insureds, counsel, underwriters, brokers and senior management.

Experience & Required Skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, influencing, negotiating and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to participate in active strategic discussions.
  • Capability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Education

  • Juris Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 7–10 years of experience in primary or excess casualty claims support for commercial accounts; casualty and construction experience a plus.
  • Active adjuster licensing in all applicable states.

    In addition to the base salary range of $107,900.00 / yr to $160,000.00 / yr, total compensation includes short- and long-term incentives.
