JOB DESCRIPTION :
This is administrative work in applying laws and regulations to the assessment of taxes due for individual income tax, fiduciary tax, and estate tax. This classification is differentiated from Tax Examiner in that it supervises Tax Examiners and Tax Examiner IIs and is required to handle the most difficult and complex tax problems. This position is located in the Income / Estate Tax Division at 51 Commerce Drive in Augusta, Maine.
Responsibilities include making determinations on amount and type of taxes owed, explaining the relevant law and computation of taxes owed and handling the most difficult and complex tax problems. Senior Tax Examiners work with limited supervision, working closely with the employees under their direction. They need to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, at all different levels-senior managers, subordinates, fellow supervisors, tax / legal professionals and, above all, with taxpayers themselves. They must be knowledgeable, tactful, and professional. Senior Tax Examiners have an integral role in reviewing work of those they supervise and will provide guidance and feedback when appropriate. Senior Tax Examiners are instrumental in hiring and training less experienced examiners. They must have the ability to gather information from a variety of sources, thoroughly review and analyze such information, and make decisions regarding the correct course of action. Strong writing skills are important.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related area and 18 months of professional work experience in accounting, auditing, or tax preparation / examination. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
Preference may be given to candidates with previous income tax, fiduciary tax, and estate tax administration experience.
