Senior Project Manager – Hazardous Materials Department

The Senior Project Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership for our Hazardous Materials (Haz. Mat.) Department , overseeing all aspects of project execution, performance, and delivery. This individual will manage and execute complex environmental projects from inception through completion — ensuring technical excellence, client satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and profitability.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned environmental professional with strong leadership capabilities, proven business development skills, and a track record of mentoring teams while managing client relationships and driving organizational success.

Key Measures of Success :

Effectively balancing project timelines, budgets, and quality while maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations. Success in this position requires combining technical acumen with strategic thinking and client-centered communication.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a diverse portfolio of environmental projects, including site investigations, remediation, permitting, regulatory compliance, and sustainability programs.
  • Act as the main point of contact for clients, fostering strong relationships, clear communication, and long-term partnerships.
  • Develop and oversee project scopes, budgets, schedules, and deliverables in accordance with client goals and regulatory standards.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to project teams, guiding staff across multiple experience levels.
  • Ensure full adherence to federal, state, and local environmental regulations and industry standards.
  • Review and approve technical reports, proposals, and client presentations.
  • Monitor project performance metrics and take corrective actions when needed to maintain scope, schedule, and financial objectives.
  • Contribute to business development initiatives, including proposal preparation, client meetings, and participation in industry events.
  • Uphold high standards of safety, quality, and risk management across all departmental operations.
  • Establish project objectives, allocate key resources, and set clear deadlines for successful completion.
  • Serve as Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA / QC) officer for the department and conduct final peer reviews of project deliverables.
  • Manage departmental budgets, analyze project costs, and ensure financial performance goals are met.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies and clients as needed.
  • Provide ongoing technical and administrative training for Haz. Mat. staff.
  • Assist company leadership with recruitment and professional development of team members.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in environmental consulting or related fields.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (Master's preferred).
  • Professional registration or certification strongly preferred (e.g., PE, PG, PMP, CHMM
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex environmental projects from concept through completion.
  • In-depth understanding of federal, state, and municipal environmental regulations (e.g., CERCLA, RCRA, Brownfield, OER
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex findings and present them clearly to clients and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with environmental site assessments ( Phase I & II ESAs ) and remediation processes.
