General Description of Position

Under the general direction and supervision of the Program Chair, Automotive Program, the Adjunct Automotive Technology instructor is responsible for instructing students in various Automotive courses (as needed), and developing, and updating the program courses in a classroom/laboratory environment. This position is also responsible for maintaining lab equipment, advising students, and working with program and College teams. This is a part-time, temporary position.

Essential Functions
Provide Student Instruction in Program Courses as Assigned Provide instruction to a diverse student population in the Automotive program. Determine the appropriate material to be covered in the course(s) assigned to teach (subject to program chair and division dean approval). Maintain positive classroom atmosphere and handle discipline problems. Develop New Courses and Update Existing Courses Develop new courses and update existing courses as required to keep the Automotive program current with industry standards and processes. New course development includes writing course objectives, developing syllabi, developing handouts and tests, and researching textbooks for course use. Also the updating of existing course to ensure that the course is current with industry standards is required. Review and recommend tools and equipment needed for quality instruction in the Automotive Program. Maintain and Upgrade Automotive Classroom/Laboratory Instructional Facilities and Equipment Responsible for security and maintenance of all instructional facilities and equipment and to ensure that it is maintained in a safe and proper working order for student use. Complete and Maintain Program and Student Records Responsible for maintaining permanent student records on courses taught and following and enforcing college policies regarding attendance policy, grading policy, and student achievement. Assist with the completion of purchase orders when ordering program instructional supplies and equipment. Complete production orders on all production projects, and maintain inventory records of all program equipment for the assigned laboratory areas. Maintain Technical Competency in Teaching Area Required to stay technically competent in all areas of teaching responsibilities by attending seminars, professional association meetings, educational workshops, and self-study. Participate in College and Program Activities and Teams Will attend, participate in and support all program activities (i.e. advisory committee meetings, open house, division meetings, etc.), College activities, and teams as requested. Act as Student and Technical Advisor for the Automotive Program Will advise Automotive program students on academic standing, support and explain College policies and procedures with students, and complete all records, forms, etc. as necessary for proper articulation and program operation. Counsel students with questions or problems they may have either on or off campus. Schedule Work - Live Shop Projects Schedule work for student projects and keep customer informed of progress and cost. Supervise/teach students during lab projects. Assist student and Parts Department in obtaining the necessary and correct parts. Test drive vehicles and evaluate student lab activities and projects during and after student has completed required work. Handle Telephone Calls and Automotive Customers Handle telephone calls about the Program, students, jobs, placement, and customers wanting repair work or reporting progress on their vehicle. Stress Safety Stress safety - making sure students work safely, wear safety glasses, and follow proper safety procedures. Perform Other College and Program Duties as Assigned Perform other College and program related duties as assigned. This will include, but is not limited to, substitute teaching as required, developing budgets, advising program chair and division dean as requested, supporting and promoting the College and the Automotive program, support student recruitment, assisting in the security of all College and program materials and equipment, and assisting in supervising student help. Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors) Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction. Professional Development Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement. Promote/Support Diversity Promote and support the College's diversity goals; promote/support Affirmative Action, EEO, Equity and Diversity programs.

Marginal Functions

1. Serve as a technical advisor from the Automotive program for assisting other programs at the College. 2. Provide assistance to other College divisions/programs/ departments as requested to ensure College policies and procedures are followed. 3. Serve as a substitute instructor within the program when needed as assigned by the program chair or division dean. 4. Operate and utilize as part of the teaching process appropriate audio-visual equipment including but not limited to overhead projector, television/video recordings, movie projector and computerized multi-media.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Possess current knowledge and work experience in the Automotive field. This will include the following: Ability to teach theory and operation in the assigned area in one or more of the following areas: Engine Repair, Automatic Transmissions/Transaxles, Manual Transmissions/Drive Trains, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance. 2. The ability and experience in diagnosing and repairing problems associated with the automobile in the area of instruction. 3. Minimum of two years current work experience in the Automotive field (related to the instructional assignment) and a working knowledge of other courses in the Automotive field. 4. The ability to operate tools and test equipment used in the assigned area of instruction. 5. Be able to demonstrate all types of processes required of an Automotive technician for the particular courses assigned to teach. 6. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication competencies necessary to conduct classroom and laboratory instruction in working with a diverse student population. 7. Be able to maintain a classroom/lab environment that is conducive to learning including the ability to maintain proper classroom order. 8. Prepare tests and quizzes that are pertinent to the lectures delivered and laboratory experiences provided and present them on a regular basis. Evaluate and return tests, quizzes and other assigned work within a short period of time to keep students informed of their progress. 9. Ability to develop lab experiences that as closely as possible simulate real business and industry processes. Be able to evaluate the student's ability to perform the lab assignments as objectively as possible. Must have a current driver's license and be able to test drive vehicles. 10. Be able to maintain student interest through the use of various types of teaching media and techniques. 11. Ability to organize and present course material in a logical and timely manner using effective communication skills. 12. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with students and College staff in all types of working relationships. 13. Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time (one to three hours) when supervising lab work and during class times (one to three hours). 14. Be able to lift from floor to five feet high equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds. 15. Possess a working knowledge of the Hazard Communication Standard/Hazard and Chemical Right-to-Know laws and regulations. 16. Ability to bend over the engine compartment of an automobile and lift approximately 40 pounds from the compartment. 17. Ability to crawl under a vehicle (that is on safety stands) on a creeper to demonstrate, instruct, or inspect and evaluate student's work. 18. Ability to position one's self under dash, in trunk, or engine compartment to demonstrate, instruct, or inspect and evaluate student's work. 19. Ability to work under vehicle on a hoist. 20. Knowledge and skill in using personal computers working with word processing. 21. The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Associate degree in Automotive Technology.
  2. Two (2) years of experience in an automotive field related to the area of assigned instruction in the Automotive program.
  3. ASE Certification in areas of instruction.
Desired Qualifications
  1. Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Two (2) years of post-secondary teaching experience.
  3. Master ASE Certification.
