Position Overview
The Lead Estimator is responsible for overseeing the estimating process for all excavation and concrete projects, from initial bid through final handoff to operations. This role ensures accurate cost projections, competitive proposals, and strong client relationships. The Lead Estimator will mentor junior estimators, coordinate with project managers, and work closely with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to develop precise bids that align with company goals and profitability standards.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Bidding
- Lead the preparation of accurate and detailed cost estimates for excavation, site work, and concrete construction projects.
- Review project specifications, drawings, and contract documents to determine scope of work.
- Prepare quantity take-offs, pricing, labor / equipment requirements, and material estimates.
- Analyze subcontractor and supplier quotes for scope, pricing, and compliance.
- Develop and submit competitive proposals that align with company strategy.
- Follow up with clients and maintain strong relationships to ensure repeat business and trust.
- Understand market trends and what types of jobs best fit our company’s capabilities, identifying where to pursue opportunities.
Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise, mentor, and train junior estimators and support staff.Collaborate with project managers and field operations to validate constructability and production rates.Lead internal bid reviews, ensuring accuracy and risk management.Support business development efforts by attending pre-bid meetings and client presentations.Process & Risk Management
Identify potential risks and opportunities in bids and recommend solutions.Maintain historical cost data and industry benchmarks to improve estimating accuracy.Ensure estimates comply with safety, regulatory, and quality standards.Assist in developing standard estimating procedures and tools.Qualifications
Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred but not required.
Experience : 10+ years estimating experience in excavation and concrete construction, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
Technical Skills :o Strong knowledge of heavy civil construction and commercial civil construction practices, including excavation and concrete.
o Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid or similar).
o Advanced skills in MS Excel and project management tools.
Other Skills :o Excellent negotiation, communication, and organizational abilities.
o Strong attention to detail and problem-solving mindset.
